And Bamm.
There was a burning pain on my cheek as my mouth dropped open. She did not just slap me!
"Don't you dare talk about my boyfriend like that!" she hissed, her face way too close to mine, and her breath too minty for my liking. I scrunched up my nose, instantly regretting it as the pain shot over my face, making me flinch.
I felt strangely calm, and I told myself to take deep breaths, not get mad.
"Oh, Hannah, I honestly feel sorry for you." I smiled fakely. "You are too blind to see that Chris doesn't like you." I almost laughed when I saw Hannah's reaction, her face full of thunder. If this had been a cartoon, there would have been smoke coming out of her ears.
"Look here, bitch. You don't need to make it so obvious that you're jealous! I know it must be difficult, not getting into the team, and not getting together with Matt. I'm sorry things aren't going well with Eric."
I gritted my teeth, biting back a remark that could make the situation worse.
"I know, thing at home aren't...perfect." She said, provoking me more. "But I know how difficult it is when they can"t afford a better horse." Her voice was rich with venom, but despite trying to keep myself calm, it was the last straw.
I leapt forward, a roar leaving my lips and let my long nails scrape down her face, scratching of layers of make-up and possibly even a layer of skin...?
"Leah!?" I heard someone screaming from behind me, but I was not even caring to listen. I jumped on top of her, cause her to fall to the ground.
"Leah!" the same voice screamed again, this time closer. "Stop!" But it was too late. Hannah and I were already rolling over and over, pathetically trying to push each other off, without getting hurt.
"You. Are. Going. To. Be. Killed." Hannah sneered into my ear, just before her knee found my stumach, resulting in me gasping for air - not my most attractive look yet.
"Leah, get off her!" I looked up, into the frantic eyes of Roxanne. I looked back down at Hannah, happy with my work of art. Her eye was swollen and she had four lines down her left cheek from where I had scratched her.
Two strong arms pulled me off her, while someone helped Hannah up.
"WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?" a loud voice boomed. I looked around, suddenly aware of my unwelcome audience. Professor Ironside suddenly appeared at my side, giving Hannah a concerned look.
I searched her eyes, sure she was about to say: "Leah scratched me." It was all she had to say to make the Professor explode.
"Nothing." She mumbled. "I just...fell."
And for once in my life, I could have kissed Hannah.
"And Leah just happened to fall on top of you?" He asked.
"Um...yeah." Hannah looked at the floor while Professor Ironside gave me a suspicious look.
"Hannah, go to First Aid to get those scratches seen to." and with that, he was gone.
I suddenly realized what had happened. Hannah stuck up for me. She stuck up for me! People like Hannah do not stick up for people like me.
She stepped towards me, her eyes boring into mine. With a low voice, so that only I could hear, she said "Don't tell anyone about what Chris said. Otherwise, you're busted." She turned around and walked away leaving me standing there dazed.
As she walked away, she bumped into Chris, who's face was instantly concerned when he saw her face. He asked something inaudible and she answered with a shake of her head. His gaze rises to me and he suddenly looked a lot less friendly. He nodded before coming towards me.
"Who do you think you are, Leah?" He shouted.
"My name is Leah Withington, I am 14 years old, I love horses, play the guitar and board at this school. I live with my aunt at weekends and my horse is called -" I blabberd.
"I don't think you were supposed to answer that." Roxanne wispered. I nodded.
"You can't just go beating my girlfriend up! Hurt her, you hurt me. Fight her, you fight me." For once Chris wasn't the stuck-up, cocky guy I knew. He seemed to actually care.
N
"Awww, look at poor little Chrisywoo all smitten over his little girlfwend." I mocked. "Look, Chris. Our fight, is our fight. You girlfriend needs to learn to stick up for herself rather than always turning to you for help. What happened had nothing to do which you" Lie "It's none of your business."
He snorted, "Maybe not, but the fact that my girlfriend will be walking around with a black eye and scratches down her face, is my business. After all, I'm the one who has to look at her everyday." Okayyyy, not so caring now, lover boy.
"Grow up, dude!" A warm voice came from behind me. "Why are you even protecting Hannah? You told me something different just yesterday."
I looked up at Eric, happy that my knight-in-shining-armor had come to my aid again. Funny how he was always there when I needed him most. I looked at his profile, almost sighing with content but stopping myself before I revealed myself. Stop being a wuss, Leah!
"Oh?" I asked Chris. "And what was it that you said?"
Chris was staring daggers at Eric. He obviously didn't want him to say.
"That's none of your business, Leah." He hissed, his eyes still glued to Eric.
I stepped forward and whispered in his ear "I guess we're even then." I turned around, grabbed Roxanne's hand a pulled her away with me, quickly shooting Eric a grateful glance which he replied with a short nod.
"You need to stop getting into fights, Leah." Roxanne sighed.
"Why?" I said. "It's not like I got hurt."
"Yeah, that's the point. You can't go around fighting with people. You shouldn't make more enemies than you need to."
"Exactly. I had to do that, Roxy. She became my enemy the day I looked into her eyes on the first day. She's so snobbish and thinks everyone is lower than her. She thinks being the 'queen bee' gives her the right to hurt people. The rest of the school can just spend their life facing the ground and scurrying away from her while she hurts feelings and ruins friendships." I took a deep breath. "But I'm not like that. I was told to stick up for what I believe. And no-one deserves to be bullied, not you, not me. Not anyone. And if hurting her is what it takes to break her..." I trailed off and turned a corner, leaving Roxanne standing there. Why is it that you get punished for being the good guy?
