The music pulses around the room, teenagers numbly dancing to the beat. A large mass of them dance together on the dance floor, while others linger around the food tables and sit on plastic chairs, such as June and I. I was almost regretting coming here, the music was bad and the punch was now lukewarm. But June was here with me, so I didn't mind.
Her purple dress sparkled, make my blue one seem dull. Her chestnut brown hair was surprisingly in curls, and I'm surprised she wasn't wobbling in her pretty pink heels since she feel tripping over not too long after she arrived. The blurred voices had gone silent: it was a slow song.
June eagerly waited in her chair, hoping for Alex to ask her to dance. I can't help but sigh. Alex was nothing but a waste of her time. And if she knew what I knew, she would think the same way. But it was her first year here, but I wish she was her as long as I was instead. But as of now, June was hopelessly infatuated with him. But to our surprise, and her delight, he did walk over and ask her to dance. As they walked over to the dance floor, my lips were pressed into a thin line, about to burst with all the things I wanted to say to her. How she was wrong about him, how he was a jerk, how she deserved some better. By the time I calmed down, they were dancing in the center of the dance floor. Alex got a little bit closer to her, like he was going to kiss her, and I saw June's face light up. I wish I was make her feel that happy instead. And right in front of everyone, Alex pushes her down.
To me, time has stopped, and everyone else but Alex and June became a blur. I run right up to Alex, and say,"How. Dare. You.",my voice drips with venom.
All Alex does is grin. "Hey, it was just an accident, June lost her balance, like the way she fell on her ass earlier. Isn't that right?" And he doesn't even have the nerve to help her up. June just sits on there, open mouthed, and her eyes, they look like shattered glass. I can't take this anymore."C'mon June, let's go." But before we walk off, I turn to face Alex. There's no way I can let him get away with this. But i look at June's eyes, and she's begging me to let it go. Begging for me to believe him. Bullshit.
"And as for you," I glare at him, seething with anger,"I would slap, you, but I'd get sick bastard on my hand." I turn and storm off with June close behind through the crowd that's now formed, and outside the back doors of the gym.
We both sit on the steps, and June looks crestfallen. "Are you okay? I can't believe that he- " I was cut off by the sound of her sobbing. I knew how badly this night meant to her.
"I can't believe it. My perfect night goes down the drain because he did that, Iz. And I was so close to forgetting about-" and she dissolves into tears. I hug her, and rub her shoulders, my own heart hurting. Hurting because I can't do anything else, not without crossing the line I've wanted to go over so badly for months now, but I can't because I don't want to cause her to suffer even more.
"Forget about who? Did something happen? Are you thinking about your ex again?"She wipes her eyes. "No one, Iz. Just someone that I've fallen for that I can't have." She sniffles, and grabs a tissue from her purse.
"I know how that feels." Especially when the person you can't have is right next to you, sobbing. I can't take it anymore. I smooth out my dress, and so softly, so she can't hear me, I whisper,"Maybe you should fall for me instead." And for what seems like forever, we both look at the stars in silence .
