It didn't take us long to reach the river, but to me it felt like a year. I dreaded what I would see when we got there, and when we did, I couldn't bring myself to look at it directly. Edwin was also affected, but in a different way.
He was not smiling, nor did he look upset. I couldn't register any expression on his face. He walked off to the river with back straight, showing off his full height, and an air of elegance. There are many time I have forgotten that Edwin is in fact an elf simply because of the way he acts; this was not one of those times.
There were many people at the river already. All races too. A few greeted Edwin as he approached, but most remained silent. I stayed well back, and tried not to think about... I still try not to think about it.
At the river, everyone was paying their respects in their own ways. Edwin had knelt down on the bed and washed his hands in the flowing blood. It was too much for me, so I looked elsewhere. Again the city caught my eye.
I always felt that I could never admire the city enough. Its not because of its architecture, I hated how it looked, but just because of what it was. Few towns tends to last for more than a generation or two. Disasters and attacks were commonplace everywhere but there. It was about 1000 years after the war ended at the time, and the rest of the world had already completely reshaped. Through all that it remained a bastion of peace and never once even flinched at anything. Even when the end came, it was the last to fall.
I was halfway through breakfast when Edwin returned. His hands and face were stained with blood. It gave me an unsettling feeling as he towered over me, lips pursed.
I got to my feet and stood up strait. Our difference in height wasn't as extreme now. He gave me a very slight smile before turning back to his caravan. I followed, finishing off my food on the way. Withing moments we were back on the road heading into the city. Our passing was uneventful, but Edwin didn't speak again until we were past the city and into Sanctuary.
