Chapter 1 Swiss Cottage

I used to love travelling on the london underground, when I lived near the chiltern hills.   You could go to Harrow on the Hill and go shopping like you do in Oxford Street.  There were lots of exotic looking people there from the local public school and the north london suburbs.

I once went all the way down the bakerloo line to Finchley Road, and investigated the area of Swiss Cottage.  I went into an art shop and bought a postcard of the swiss cottage.

It seemed really exciting to travel up there, I think I was only about eighteen, and I had had quite a sheltered life.  However trains seemed to be a good escape.

I always used to try to make conversation with the person opposite me on a train and try to find out about their life.

These days I am usually too tired, or I have my family with me and i am too busy to worry about other people.

I always used to love going to london on the tube, it had a certain smell to it - this was in the days when you could still smoke on a train.

I used to have a boyfriend who I would meet on the train, and then we would go to Oxford Street or Covent Garden or somewhere like that.  I actually can't remember where we went now.  However it seemed like such an adventure at the time.

I always wanted to go to the classy shops, I think we went into Liberty once, I still like going in there and seeing all the lovely William Morris prints and all the fancy makeup and needlework stuff.

I probably went to Garfunkels, I always used to go there and have something from the salad bar and then cover it with thousand island dressing.

I used to go to Camden Market with my french friend and buy old fashioned military jackets.  I see people wearing them now, but they are much younger than me and I'm not sure I could pull it off anymore.

I always like the flowers that are for sale at the London stations, but that is usually when I am just about to go home, and I am too tired to go over there.
