"Mummy?" Could I sound anymore like a child right now? I mean, yeah, it's my mom, but there are people listening in, and they'll send me here to visit the looney bin, and then someone is going to mysteriously die and then I'll go to jail and what if-

"Darry? Have you come to visit?" Eesh. Her own son, and she can't remember his name.

"No, ma. Harry? And I thought maybe we could, uh, talk? About...stuff?" I can't hold conversation. Unless it's in the bedroom...and then I pull out the knife and-no no nonononononono stopstopstopstop! No more killing! Uh-uh!  Plus, bedroom talk with my mum would be so awkward.

"Stuff? I thought you knew about the birds and the bees dear?" I guess she doesn't see my panicked face, because she continues,"Well, when a man loves a woman, and-"

"Ahh! Oh my gosh mom, I understand that!" I flush red and run my hand through my hair, impatient. "I just wanted to hold conversation with you, cause it's a bit lonely here."

"No, sweetie, I'm good.  I've got Esteban right here to keep me company.  Do you want to meet him?  ESTEBAN!"  Right then, a brawny man around the age of 47 comes up to my mother sitting behind the glass and starts full-on making out with Anne in front of me.  Needless to say, I turn away and write a quick note to my mum, because quite obviously, she's preoccupied.

Bye, Mummy.

Much love,
Harry xoxo

As I'm walking away to find the door in this blank white canvas, I am hit with a tonne of force in the form of a girl wearing white (you guessed it, everything in here is white) scrubs and a nursing cap.  I didn't even know they still made those, let alone wear them.

As she stares at me in a mixture of humiliation, shock, and anger, I take a closer look at her petite figure.  She has green, almond-shaped eyes framed by a square face with thick black hair sprouting from her scalp.

"Excuse you!  I was trying to get somewhere, you big oaf!" I continue to stare at her, entranced by her cheeks, either reddening from anger or-

"Are you mute?  Or just stupid?" Yup.  Definitely anger.

"I-uh...hi."

"I-uh-uh-uhpologize please, or I'll carve out your heart.  I'm certified, you know." I think I might be in love.

I clear my throat and stand a bit straighter, her eyes widening at my towering size, but her attitude remaining, annoyingly, intact.

"I'm looking for a hot date tonight.  Would you mind meeting me at eight near Central Park?" At a seconds hesitation, I apologize.  "Sorry.  For running into you.  I can't find the exit."

"Oh." Her face slackens, and her green eyes fill with wonder.   "Sure.  I'm Elizabeth." Blankly, she reaches out her left hand to shake.  I take it in mine, swallowing it almost fully.

"Harry."

Epilogue

I quickly exit the hospital, ready to take a shower and wash away the troubles that today brought.  Preforming a heart transplant is one of the most tiring things I've ever done in my life, but it helps with the need to slice and stab.

For the most part, Haylie has been the only one talking in my head, and when she hasn't, I just think of Elizabeth, and all of the sudden, I'm okay.

I'm planning on proposing to Elizabeth today, actually.  I really hope she'll say yes.  After all, it's only been two years, but she's somehow woven herself into my life, and that's where I hope she'll stay.

••

Oh my Gouda cheese I'm so freaking nervous. (Elizabeth doesn't let me curse.  It's spilled into my head)

What if she doesn't say yes?  What if she doesn't show up?  I invited her to Central Park for 'no reason' and maybe she just ditched me.  Ugh!  Why is life so hard!  Hehe.  That's what she said.

"Harry?  Are you out here?"

"Yeah, who's asking?" I'm pretty sure it's Elizabeth.

"Elizabeth... Where are you, Harry?" I see her slowly walking towards me, and I stand up and begin waving my hands around, accidentally tossing the box containing that dang ring into the pond surrounding the fountain, and she notices.

"Aw, shizwop.  I-ah.  Be right back." I race to the fountain and fall in, drenching myself and an old lady collecting spare change.  Grasping for the ring, I'm faintly aware of Elizabeth tugging on my arm, but I ignore her until I've firmly caught the engagement box between my fingers.

"Harry!" She hasn't changed a bit from that day in the institution.

"Yes, butterfly?" Keep it sweet, keep it sweet.

"I was trying to show you that I've got one too." Woah.  I did not see that one coming.

We both kneel down at the same time and ask the dreaded question.

"Will you marry me?"

"This is so unexpected!  Of course!  I love you!" We both jump around and squeal like stereotypical elementary girls before fumbling around to slide the rings onto each other's fingers.

"Hey, did you bring a picnic?  I-uh forgot." I ask, suddenly embarrassed.

"Erm.  No..." Ah, we're so perfect.

Instead of worrying, I take her face in mine and gently smoothing out the creases in her brow, I press my lips to hers, sparks lighting up my world.
