Chapter 4- Realisation
I stood up from the ground and cautiously made my way over to the car. A small glow came from the vehicle, becoming brighter as I got closer. I contemplated turning and heading away from the scene, I didn’t really want to be here if she woke up. But, curiosity got the better of me, as I headed to the driver seat. There she sat, exactly the same as she looked two minutes ago, but something was different. Her hair? No that appeared the same, maybe it was her face? No that was the same too, so what was it? I looked around her and noticed that the steering wheel had been pushed back into the windscreen, allowing her legs to be free. As I was inspecting the steering wheel, wondering how much force you’d need to push it back, she moved. I jumped in shock and turned to look at her. Her blue eyes were open and staring right at me. She raised her hand to feel the gash on her head which appeared to be getting smaller and smaller and gently touched it, wincing as she did so.
I didn’t move. I just stared in wonder as the gash appeared to completely disappear and she lookednormal again.
“Idiot,” She whispered quietly.
“What?” I asked quickly.
But no reply came. Her eyes closed and she appeared to be sleeping, her chest moving up and down slowly.
It suddenly clicked. This was what Charon was talking about… and Steven… My actions have consequences. I was drifting from my job. I was the taker of life, not the giver of it. This was a mistake. I wasn’t meant to do this, she was meant to die. I was meant to have taken her life and moved on , but I hadn’t, she was now alive, and everything was out of place.
Oops.
I ran away from the scene, back to my car and drove as far away as I could. My petrol tank was getting low and the roads were getting crowded, but I needed somewhere to think. I decided upon a little place I’ve been before which opened my mind. Swerving the car around, I changed route, much to the annoyance of the cars behind me.
I drove for almost two hours by the time I reached it. It was near the sea, so close that it was within a ten minute walk at a slow pace. I sat on the hill, the grass damp beneath me as I contemplated what to do. I watched the waves lick the shore, crashing violently against the rocks, sending them flying in all directions. It was truly mesmorizing to watch, as the pebbles bounced along, being pulled back by the retreating tide towards the endless ocean.
Maybe no one would notice what I’d done. Surely other people saved people’s lives all the time, why was this any different? I was the only one who knew about it, so if I kept quiet everything would be okay. But what if I wasn’t the only one to know about it? No, that was stupid, of course I was. Who else would be there at the exact same time I was?
A loud noise above me caused me to look up. A seagull flapped its wings rudely above me as it screeched overhead. I ignored it and looked back out to the sea, but it didn’t go away. It just stayed a couple of metres above my head circling and squawking.
“Go away!” I exclaimed waving my hands above my head.
The bird seemed to find my outburst entertaining as he screeched louder.
“Seriously!” I cried, standing up and trying to hit it. “Get lost. I need to think! Have you just saved a person you shouldn’t have instead of taking their life?!”
The bird stopped squawking and looked at me oddly. It was almost as if it could hear every word I was saying. It then promptly flew away, until I couldn’t see it anymore. Thankful, I decided I’d had enough of being outdoors. I wanted to go and have a drink. I choose to head back towards my car.
