Chapter I The Journey Begins

I am far from being alone in my interest in some of the mysteries of life. What is out there in the cosmos, how did it all begin, how did we get here, why are we here, and are we alone in the universe. These are some of the things that have captivated our imaginations ever since conscious beings could look up at the sky in wonderment. We all have things that puzzle us and often guide us on our personal journey of discovery.

However, my fascination has been brewing since childhood when I would have déjà vu moments and out of body experiences. Then later on in the fifties I was fascinated with the Bridey Murphy Story about hypnotism and regression into past lives, and then Edgar Cayce's extraordinary ability to diagnose and heal while in a trance. According to the Edgar Cayce Foundation he had knowledge of the world and the future that he also garnered from his trances.

Some of these claims seemed preposterous and the Bridey Murphy Story was researched and supposedly explained away, but I always wondered if there wasn't something going on which might help in demystifying some of the big questions.

A lot of time passed until I was eventually retired and had occasion to visit a curandera (psychic healer) in Mexico. Every village used to have curanderos and most still do, at least in the southern states. In order to become recognized practicing curanderos they must take many years of extensive training, and in the case of Teresa Santiago in Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, she was forbidden to get married until she had completed the course. This took her about ten years. Not a trivial effort.

She was identified as a young teenager of having a special gift; seeing things that others could not see, having imaginary friends, and generally acting strangely as a result. Her parents thought she had a mental illness, but the local curanderos heard about her and urged her parents to start her training. It was shortly after that that I visited her for the first time. Then after a few more visits I really wanted to understand how she could do the things she did.

An example of Teresa's ability was the case of Sally, whom I had met in Oaxaca. When Sally heard about Teresa, she really wanted to go and get assessed. She had just been diagnosed with a mild form of leukemia. She was naturally very worried about this, even though the doctors said she would not need any treatment yet.

I agreed to go with Sally and advised her to not say anything about her illness before her session. I explained that Teresa will do her assessment and then if she does not identify your problem you can ask her afterwards.

As it turned out we all went in together to the room where Teresa does her assessment; Sally, her husband Ralph, and myself. Ralph, a very practical guy, recently retired and extremely skeptical about the whole activity, was tagging along, not paying much attention, and would much rather have been playing golf.

The room had a dirt floor and religious artifacts on the walls. Teresa sat in a chair behind a small table facing a plain wooden bench where we sat.

Before the session there was no talking, no discussion, no touching, just sitting opposite each other. When the session started Teresa asked Sally to touch the deck of cards three times and then she spread them out face up on the table and moved them around with her hands. While still examining the cards and pointing to them, she started giving her reading.

I had seen this routine many times before and was always puzzled as to it's significance. Maybe there was no significance to it. Maybe it was just for show. Then ...

Teresa's very first words were "you have a blood disease", adding "but you will not need to be treated". I noticed her husband straighten up, gasp, turn a bit pale in shock and say, "who is this person".

I had had many visits to Teresa before this, so I wasn't totally surprised at how dead on she was. But it did strengthen my resolve to try and understand how she and others like her see and know what they do.

Edgar Cayce was documented thoroughly for the same sort of thing, but I didn't know Edgar Cayce and hadn't his foundation, but Teresa was right there close and convenient and I took advantage of it as often as I could.

Other events in my life added to my curiosity about how we can communicate with our minds.

We had been living on our farm for about thirty years when one day as I walked by our log barn and my eyes turned to look at the chinking. As I was gazing at the barn and the chinking I thought, "Lynn B really did a good job of chinking this barn 25 years ago". It had been that long since I had seen Lynn who used to hang out at our place when she was a young woman and did odd jobs for us now and then. I hadn't seen or thought of Lynn in all that time. I continued walking up to the house and sat in the living room with the other people who were there. Just as I sat down I saw an old van drive up to the house and watched a couple get out. The woman was very obese and I didn't recognize the man.

I went to the door to meet these strangers when the woman said, "Hi, remember me, Lynn B, from many years ago. We were driving by and I wanted to come and say hello". During our hour long conversation my mind was racing and I was trying to find a way to tell her what had just happened. But in the end I didn't mention it.

Afterwards I thought about it and wondered how we made the connection. She must have been thinking of me as she was driving up to our place as I was walking past the barn and I picked up that signal or thought. I cannot convince myself that this was pure coincidence.

Another time, in Oaxaca, Mexico I was alone and leaving my Hotel to find a restaurant. I walked slowly through the parking lot to the street and turned right. There were restaurants all around the hotel so it was somewhat arbitrary which way I went.

However, as soon as I turned right I felt something take hold of my shoulders and turn me completely around and I found myself walking very fast in the opposite direction. When I reached the intersection I saw a white van go by and stop with a woman waving and calling my name. It was Esperanza that I knew from Puerto Escondido. I knew she was coming that weekend but had no idea when or how. It was just one of many strange communications that we had experienced with her. Esperanza had psychic powers and could have been a curandera but didn't want to be known as a bruja (witch).

Some of these personal experiences that were happening to me intensified my interest in understanding how it all works. I was educated as an electrical engineer and worked in high tech, so I thought I should be able to understand some of the research. I was retired, with some free time, and the internet was up and running, so I had no more excuses. I had to get on it.
