What does it take to be a failure? How about a traitor? If anything, Stella was making it seem as though We're Jewish friends and I just walked off and joined up with the Nazis. I know, bad comparison, given our situation, but it's all I could think of.
"Don't even think about it," She said
"I'm just going to check on him. He looks lonely. Would you like to?" I asked
"Yes. But I can't," She picked at her nails.
"Why not? Because you're scared? Youre such a baby stella," I stood up.
"Okay I'll do it!" She jumped. I sat down, smiling.
Stella slowly walked over to the table where Nicklaus sat alone. "Hola, I mean you don't speak Spanish. Hello, um how do you say hi in German?"
Nicklaus laughed. " Hallo. And who are you exactly?" Stella looked bug-eyed when she heard his voice.
"I uh s... I'm Stella. I get to introduce all of the new kids."
" I have been here all semester? I think I know my way around. " Nicklaus looked back down at his plate.
"We'll would you like some company?" Stella asked.
"No I'm okay. Ich liebe eating alone. I like being by Myself at lunch." He said, blushing at his use of German words.
"Okay well bye, see you later. " Stella walked off awkwardly.
"So Stel, how's Prince Charming treating you?" I teased.
"Shut up. He wouldn't even let me talk to him long. I fucked up though. "
"How?"
"Is it even possible to be a failure in three languages?"
"Not as long as you read the right books in Spanish class. " that gave Stella an idea.
"When's homecoming? Isn't it this week?"
"No Stella. Prom is this week. Homecoming was months ago. "
"Zelma, I need to borrow some supplies. "
"Using my full first name, this must be serious," I waved my hands dramatically.
"It is. I need a poster and some markers."
"Okay. Come by after school. What's it for?"
"It's a secret. "
"No secrets Stella. "
"You'll know if it works. "
"Okay. "
The lunch bell rang and I made my way to Chemistry.
