It was Saturday. I woke up to the early morning sun. I groan. "Why do I always wake up early on the weekends?" I think. I roll over in bed but need to go pee so I hoist myself up and trudge to the hallway bathroom. I do my business and then I go downstairs. I decided to make breakfast. I took out the cold eggs and splatted them against a metal bowl. I then split it open watching the yellow ooze out of the shell. When I was all done with making the scrambled eggs I called Mom and my older sister, who is 15 and her name is Irena, downstairs for breakfast. They were very happy that I made breakfast. After breakfast Mom said,"Girls. I have to go somewhere for a little while. You guys just stay home." "Ok Mom," I said. "Okay," Irena said. Two hours later Mom came home. She walked through the garage door with two kids behind her who looked to be my age. I didn't know who these kids were. I definitely wouldn't think that they were the thing that they are. Mom motions everyone to the living room and to sit on the couch. "Mom? Who are these people?" I ask. I didn't want to seem like I was being mean. So I smiled at both of them shyly. "I'm just curious," I said. They smiled shyly back. "Mapel. Irena. These kids's names are Willow"-she gestured to the girl-"and Carson."-she gestured to the boy-"The kids are your siblings. Same goes for you Willow and Carson. Irena and Mapel are your siblings," Mom said. Mom points to me."That is Mapel," Mom said. Mom points to Irena. "That is Irena," Mom said. "Your guys's Dad died. That is why Willow and Carson are here and will live with us. Dad and I got divorced when you three were babies and Irena was 2. None of you guys remember that time of your life," Mom said. "The guest room will be turned into Carson's room and, Mapel, you will share a room with Willow," Mom said. "Oh and by the way. Willow you are three minutes older than Mapel and Carson is two minutes older than Mapel," Mom said. "The reason why Dad and I got divorced is because we couldn't live together. We thought that each other were very nice but we just couldn't live with each other. Dad got a job in a different state and decided to move there. We agreed that we each get half of the kids. It was heartbreaking for us to see that we had to leave our kids but it was the only choice," Mom said. "Now Mapel take Willow to your room and show her around. I will help Carson," Mom said. I couldn't believe it! My life had one sister in it. Zero brothers. Zero dads. One mom. But now my life has changed. I have a sister who is my age. I have a brother who is my age. I like this change but I need to get used to it. I go over to Willow. "Hello, Willow," I said. "Hi, Mapel," Willow said. "Lets go to my room. I meant our room," I said. I skipped up the stairs. Willow following close behind. I walked down the hallway to my room which was in between Irena's room and the guest room (Now Carson's room). "So this is the room," I said. "Wow! It's gorgeous!" Willow said. The walls were a wonderful shade a turquoise and my big bed which the comforter had squares of turquoise and dark blue with small white ruffles separating each square. The white pillows were fluffed nicely on the bed but you couldn't see them because they were hidden under blue dolphin shaped pillows. My dresser was on one side of the room. My desk was on the other side of the room. They were both white. There was a large mirror that was full length of your body and when you slid the mirror my closet appeared. The mirrors slid behind or over each other so that each mirror when you slid it open revealed half of my closet. "Thanks!" I said. We can split the dresser and the closet in half and we an also share the bed," I said. "I'm so sorry to barge in on your room," Willow said. "Its fine. And you didn't barge in. Also it wasn't your fault that your dad died," I said. "Its your dad too," Willow said. She sounded really sad speaking of the word dad. "Yeah," I said absently. My dad too. But he is dead. I didn't know what to think. My mind was whirling around. Everything was happening so fast. I couldn't process it. I was dizzy. We spent the rest of the morning unpacking her stuff and splitting the dresser and the closet. Sometimes Willow would fall quiet and a tear would fall. At lunch time everything was unpacked. "Kids! I made turkey sandwiches!" Mom yelled. Willow and I trampled down the stairs. Carson was already there. "Hi," Carson said shyly. "Hi!" I said. Carson had blonde hair and deep blue eyes. Carson was very cute. We all looked pretty similar. Carson looked like the boy version of me. Willow looked like me just with longer hair (My hair stopped at my ribs and Willow's stopped at her belly button. Or at least where a normal belly button would be. I haven't seen her belly button.) We ate lunch and Mom talked about random stuff. Like the weather. She just talked about how amazing California is and how much Carson and Willow are going to like it. She said that it was much warmer than Colorado. Willow said kindly that she already figured that out and she laughed when she said that. Yes we live in California. Carson didn't say a word. Irena was out with her boyfriend, Asher. She'd been obsessed with him and can't get enough of him. Honestly I'm tired of it. I wish she would just lay back a little on him. Spent more time with her family. At night I pulled out my PJs from my half of the dresser and Willow did the same with her side of the dresser. "I'll change in the bathroom," Willow said. When Willow and I were all comfy cozy in the bed I reached over to my white night stand and tugged the chain on my lap. The lamp shut off leaving the room dark. The next thing I know its morning and Willow is not in bed. I shuffle out of bed pulling the covers up and walked out of my room. I searched the whole house for her and finally found her in the closet. She had a blanket on her and she appeared to be sleeping? "Willow?" I said confused. Willow wakes up. She sits up fast and says, "Hi Mapel! Um I woke up early and I went exploring your house!" Willow said. She was clearly hiding something. "Oh. Ok," I said. I went to the bathroom and did my business. I looked at myself in the mirror. I didn't look like myself. I looked frazzled. My hair was worse than usual when I first wake up. I could see zits forming on my forehead. I was honestly confused. Later at breakfast Mom announced that we were going to have a picnic at the beach. Mom, Willow, and I made the sandwiches. Irena got out the picnic basket, picnic cloth, and sunscreen. Carson watched where Irena went to go get the cloth and went in there to see if there were towels in there. He clearly was trying to make himself useful. He came out of the place where Irena got the picnic cloth with a stack of towels. "Are we swimming?" he asked. "Yes, hun," Mom said. After we got everything ready for the picnic we all dressed into our swimsuits. I wore my blue bikini and my white cover up. We all got into the car. Mom and Irena in the front. Me in the middle of the back row. Carson on the left side of me. Willow on the right side of me. On the way there I slapped on the cold sunscreen. When we got there Carson and Willow were so surprised at the ocean. "Wow!" Willow said. "Amazing," Carson whispered. I was starting to catch on that Carson was the shy and quiet type. "This is California," I said. We went down the long ramp. I could hear my flip flops slap slapping on the concrete. Down at the sand we set up our cloth and put the picnic basket in the middle. I flicked off my rubber flip folds and dug my toes into the warm sand. Willow did the same. "It's so nice," Willow said. "I love California," I said. I sat on the cloth and started pulling out food from the basket. Carson sat down next to me and helped me pull out the food. "Is the water warm?" he asked. "Usually but it will probably take at least a few minutes to get used to," I said. He nodded. The food was good. The cool baloney in the sandwich felt good on the hot day. "Tomorrows school?" Carson asks. "Yes," I said. He looks down. "Whats wrong?" I ask. Something about the way he said tomorrows school and how he looked down made me think something was wrong. "Nothing. Just nervousness, I guess," he said. "Come on Carson! Don't be nervous!" Willow said. "Carson, the kids at Mapel's school are very kind," Mom said. After we eat we jump run into the water. Willow and I splash each other laughing. Carson wades in the water looking out at the horizon. Willow and I go in deeper and stop splashing each other. "Carson is a boy of few words," Willow said. "I see that," I said. "You miss your dad?" I asked Willow. "He's your dad too," Willow said. I looked at the blue gray water. "Yeah. Your right," I said. I couldn't believe that he was actually my dad too. "And yes. I miss him a lot. I cried 6 hours straight along with Carson after his death," Willow said. The next day is morning. I wake up and, again, Willow wasn't in the bed. I sat up in bed. I looked at the floor to see Willow in her pajamas, wrapped in a ball, rocking back and forth. Her head rested on her knees and her blue eyes were very wide. "What's wrong, Willow?" I ask flinging my legs off the bed and standing up. "I don't feel well," Willow said. "Why did you get up from bed, then?" I asked. "Because I didn't want to get you sick," Willow said. "Oh don't worry. get back in bed. I'll go tell Mom," I said. Willow weakly climbed back in bed. I scampered down the stairs. "Mom, Willow is sick," I told Mom. "Oh no! Let me go check on her," Mom said. "You tell Carson to get ready for school. You get ready for school too," Mom said. I patted up the stairs and knocked on Carson's bedroom door. He opened it. "Time to get ready for school," I said. He smiled. "Already am!" he said. "Great! Go downstairs. Willow is sick. I think that breakfast is on the table," I said. "Thanks," Carson said. Then he walked to the stairs. When I walked into Willow and I's room Mom was taking Willow's temperature. "You have a small temperature," Mom said. "Feel better, Willow," I said. Then I grabbed my clothes and went to the bathroom to change. Willow was obviously not going to school. After I changed and brushed my hair I applied a thin layer of mascara and eye shadow. Then I swiped some lip gloss on. Downstairs breakfast was on the table. Carson and Irena were already chowing it down. I ate mine too. Then I told Carson that he should probably go pee because at school we weren't allowed to go to the bathroom during class. He nodded his head. Mom took Carson, Irena, and I to school. Irena was in the high school so she got dropped off first because the high school is closer to our house. Then me in Carson got dropped off. Carson gulped. I smiled encouragingly at him. "You'll do great," I said. "Thanks," he said smiling weakly. At lunch I sat with my friends like always. "Who's the new cutie?" Emmy asked pointing and looking to Carson who was sitting at a table alone. "Yes! He is totes adorbs!" Ezmay said. "Definitely!" Izzy said. "Super cute!" Annabella said. "Agreed!" said Adeline. I thought that Carson was cute but fore pete's sake he's my brother! "Anyone know who he is?" Emmy asks. "Me," I said looking down. They all looked at me. "Who is he, Mapel? He has got to be new!" Izzy said. I took a deep breath. I looked up at them. "He's my brother," I said. "WHAT!?" they all screamed. "But you only have one sister. And she is 15," Adeline said. "Well, turns out that I have two sisters and one brother," I said. "Two sisters!?" they all screamed. "Yeah. Her name is Willow. She is sick today so she couldn't come to school," I said. "You know how I live with my mom? Not with my dad," I said. They all nodded. "My mom divorced my dad when we were all babies and irena was a little toddler. My dad died just recently so the kids he had living with him were sent here and now live here with mom, irena, and I. I didn't know about this until they my mom brought them to our house and told us all," I said. "Wow," everyone said. Then they all grinned. "You can get me together with your brother!" Emmy cried. "No me!" Cried Adeline. "No me!" The rest of the group cried. "Carson is different than most boys. I don't think he wants me attempting to get a girl for him. Also I don't want you guys being my friends just because of my brother," I said. "I should probably go check on him," I said slinging my legs over the bench.
