Its only the first day of school and I’m already dreading it. My dad decided it was a “great idea” to move from Boston to Califonia, but I couldn’t disagree more. He even tried getting me into a dress this morning, but I stuck to my adida outfit.
All my teachers introduced me in front of the class, as if the kids didn’t already know I was new. First class was Math, Second-English, Third-Art, Fourth-Study hall, and Im in History right now, the fifth. Our teacher was giving everyone a lecture, but as usual, no one was listening. The bell rang indicating it was lunch and everyone jumped up and got out as fast as they could.
I got up, gathered my things, and went to my locker. I switched out all of my things for the last class, Chemistry. As I stood up, I noticed the halls were empty, everyone was already at lunch. Great, now I’m going to be walking in all alone. I rolled my eyes and made my way over to the courtyard.
Walking out, you could already tell who the populars, jocks, nerds, and skaters were. My eyes scanned for a place to sit and spotted a place on the other side. As I was walking past, I heard faint whistling.
A boy with a red bandana was motioning for me to come over. I hesitated for a minute contemplating whether or not to go over, noticing it was the “popular” group, but I hopelessly walked over to him. There was about 8 other guys with him, and I will admit, they were pretty cute.
The bandana boy started talking, “So you’re the new girl ?” he looked me up and down and continued, “the hot one too.” My eyes widened in disgust, “and you’re a pig.” The boy sitting across from him choked on his water at my remark. “Actually, I’m Taylor, care to sit with us beautiful?” I smiled at him, “Actually, I do,” turning away I saw everyone watching me. I felt my cheeks burning and took a seat next to a boy wearing a black vans sweat shirt.
“I can’t believe you just did that,” he looked in amazement. “Why?” I laughed. “No one’s ever turned them down before.” I grinned, “Well I am a no one.” The boy laughed, “My names Jacob by the way.” “B.” He took a bite out of his sandwich when his phone went off with a group text, from Taylor. I rose my eyebrow, “So, you’re one of them?” He laughed, “People consider me to be. But if I’m being honest, we’re more of frenemies.” The bell rand as I laughed at his word choice.
It was the last class of the day, Chemistry, and we were already getting assigned lab partners. He called everyones name except for mine, “I guess there’ll just be a group of three.” I started walking towards two other girls as an out of breath voice filled the room, “Sorry I’m late, my locker wasn’t working. The teacher clapped, "Ah, Mr. Cameron, you can be partners with miss "Jessie.” I turned around, great, it was the kid across from Taylor. One of the girls whispered, you’re so lucky.“ Yeah, lucks the word.
We took our seats and the boy started talking, "Hey, I’m sorry for earlier, Taylor’s not the brightest.” I managed not to make eye contact, “I can tell.” He touched my arm, sending chills through my body, “I mean it.” I looked at his face, his expression. I smile and nodded, trying to focus back on the teacher. He was good looking, but he was still one of them. At my old school, I got involved with a group like his, and it was nothing but bad memories and I wasn’t going to relive them.
I zoned out as the teacher was giving us the same lecture as the other ones. When the bell rang the boy faced me, “Can I use your phone really quick? I can’t find mine.” I gave him my phone as I was packing up. He gave it back, “I’ll call you later,” and he walked out. What? It took me a while to realize that he never really lost his phone, he just wanted my number. Smooth.
