"Alright, promise me you won't, like, tell or anything."
"Okay."
"No, promise me, Mads."
"Amelia, you're being absolutely-"
"Dude."
"Fine, I promise I won't 'tell or anything.'"
"Okay, don't look behind you now, but-"
I rolled my eyes and, with a loud sigh, turned around in the stool attached to the cafeteria table to look where my sister's eyes were trained intensely. Wow, so incredibly surprising who she was staring at. Not like it was the only person my twin ever wanted to talk about. "What about Alice?" I asked, mildly bored as I watched my friend a few tables away talk to some Asian girl with a name I couldn't remember for the life of me.
"I said don't turn ar-! Ugh!" Amelia slammed her hands down on the table. Not like Alice could even see us when she had her back turned to us. "She has a new dress," my sister pointed out, gesturing wildly with her hand towards the girl in question. I shifted back around so I could glare at Amelia and eat my food at the same time.
"And?"
"And... It's new."
"Astounding how people buy new clothes." I swirled my fork around in my spaghetti, watching it collect the noodles in the metal prongs with feigned interest.
"But Alice never wears dresses. Just skinny jeans and eyeliner." The spark in those blue eyes had returned for the first time after a hard geometry test a few periods before, a small smile quirking up the corner of Amelia's mouth. Amelia seemed to radiate happiness when she talked about Alice, giving me a sneaking suspicion something was up with the contradictions in the nonverbal signals happening when she spoke about her sworn enemy. No way anyone would be that cheerful about a person they hated as much as Amelia said she hated Alice.
"And we decided that you most definitely still don't like her, right?"
"Yeah." Her eyes hadn't moved off of Alice's back since the second the British girl sat down after us. "She's a dick."
"Okay." I ate a forkful of noodles, leaning my elbows against the table as I chewed. "Can I invite the dick to sit with us?" I asked.
"You sound like a fucking cow, Mads," Amelia said with an eye roll. "Chew with your mouth closed and shut up." I raised my eyebrows at her, immediately chewing my food with extreme exaggeration as I opened and closed my mouth loudly. "Jesus, you're annoying."
"Love you, too," I said, wiping my mouth off with my fingers. "But can Alice sit with us?"
"No," Amelia said immediately. Her eyes grew huge.
"Please?"
"No."
"Cool, I'm doing it." I turned to call out to my friend across the cafeteria, ignoring Amelia's pleas to get me to sit down again and shut up. "Alice!" She jumped at the sound of her name, turning away from her companion to smile at me. Alice said a quick goodbye to the girl she was with before gathering her things and trotting over.
"Hi," she said breathlessly as she brushed a wisp of hair away from her mouth. Her lips were painted a dark shade of red, making her green eyes pop and her freckles stand out. "What do you need?" I could immediately tell she was avoiding looking at my sister.
"For you to go away," Amelia grumbled under her breath, glaring down at her chicken fingers and sinking in her stool. I kicked her shins under the table.
