I held out my hand for him to shake, trying to display confidence while hiding my trembling behind tall barriers within my mind.
" It's nice to meet you Dr. Green, I'm so sorry for disturbing you, you must be really busy" I mustered up a small, shy smile, while my eyes took inventory of everything happening in his face and my surroundings.
His eyes lit up at my smile.
"None of this Doctor business, call me Sean, besides there I always have time in my schedule for beautiful young ladies such as yourself". He finished with a flirtatious wink; I blushed.
"Now, what seems to be the problem?"
At this Mr Blackbourne broke in, "She got into an altercation, though she seems capable of defending herself", at this he cast a furtive glance in my direction, " I would feel better if she had a quick scan."
Dr. Green patted the patients bed " Okay Pookie, come sit up here and tell me if anything hurts."
My jaw dropped in shock; "Pookie?!"
With a sly glance at Mr. Blackbourne he replied, grinning.
"I think it suits you, it's cute, and sweet, It fits you to a Tee."
Mr. Blackbourne sighed, "Sean, if you could please stop flirting with your patients and for once in your life do your job, it would be much appreciated."
I froze at the assessment; he was flirting? With me? Why would he want to?
Dr. Green pouted "Your no fun," He looked back to me, "Do you see what I have to put up with? I swear he's out to get me."
Mr. Blackbourne rolled his eyes, "Sean, Miss Sorenson?"
Sean smirked; I got the feeling that this easy banter was normal for them. "How could I forget? So Pookie; Where are you feeling pain?"
I slid my mask back on, my mind racing; I couldn't tell them about my ribs, that would lead to questions I couldn't answer, but I would need to tell them about what they could tell from looking at me, otherwise they would realise I was hiding my injuries.
"I bruised my knuckles when I punched him, and twisted my wrist" I didn't lie about the bruised knuckles, but I had truthfully sprained my wrist yesterday, when my mother was dragging me to the floor, I hadn't got a sprain in a fight for years; I was too well trained.
Mr. Blackbournes eyebrows raised at the last part and I realised he had noticed my moves were perfect; no cause for a sprain.
Sean studied my arm, before gently to get a better look.
As he did so, he touched my ribs to steady me, and both our eyes widened; his in horror, mine in dismay, as the spot he touched moved on the in two different places under his fingers.
"Sang," he said looking at me carefully, taking note of the skittish look I had on, "It appears you have a break on your ribs, do you mind if I take a look."
I cursed the failure of my mask, and my luck. I wouldn't be able to get out of here without unwanted interest into my life. I decided to get it over and done with.
I slowly raised my shirt, giving full view of my muscles, scars, burns, bruises, welts and cuts.
I looked away, not wanting to see the horror and disgust dawning on thier faces.
