"Esme! Get down here, it's time for your History lesson with Henry!" Her mother, Leora, shouted from the bottom of the staircase below Esme's room. Esme sighed, closing her book and laying it on her white bed before throwing a old jacket on over her tank top and heading downstairs to meet with her mentor. Henry, her mentor, was around six foot tall and was slim. He had shaved light brown hair and big glasses that took over his pale face. Henry was always nice to Esme, but he treated her as if she was ten instead of seventeen.

"Henry." Esme said, greeting him as she walked into their libary. He was concentrated on a book, scribbling down notes with a serious expression when he noticed her. His eyes peeked over his round glasses and then he motioned for her to sit. She walked towards him and sat down on one of the old brown leather chairs by the wooden table covered in mountains of books.

"We're having a different lesson today, Esme." He said as he closed is book, looking up at her as if it were her he was studying, "Have you heard of Scarlet Mugella?"

"Isn't she a Mentett?" Esme questioned.

"Preciscely. She was one of the founders of the Mentett, in fact. She is known as one of the most powerful Mentett to ever live, it is said she was a unique creation of angel, a gift to man kind to help defend evil and protect Dynoli."

"If she is so special why haven't I heard about her?"

"Because it is said she was so..different from everyone else, others began to believe she was evil. They believed that she was too good, that it could never be true. Now people only see her as a myth, as if she never existed." Henry explained.

"Do you believe she existed?"

"It isn't for me to say," Henry shrugged "but if you really want to know, I have a good feeling she did."

"What happened to our normal studies?" Esme laughed. Normally she learned the typical Mentett studies. She must learn the geography of her world, the way of her people, and the history. She also must learn how to govern and how to protect.

"This very important, Esme. You must take this serious-" Henry began before Ingrid, her younger sister, skipped into the room

"Esme! I'm sorry to interupt but Alaric is here to see you." Ingrid chirped. Henry made a funny expression before shaking his head and returning his eyes to his book, continuing to scribble down notes.

Alaric was Esme's godfather, and she used to spend every summer with him up until she was thirteen. The last summer she spent with him was the year she fell in love, and also the year that her older brother, Jeremiah, was killed. She was seventeen now, and hasn't been back since. Alaric would call every now and then, but he wasn't much on technology. He rarely ever visited Angirren.

She hesistated for a moment before excusing herself from her lessons and walked with her sister down the hallway into the foyer. There he stood, and he didn't look any different from the last time she had seen him. His brown hair was still untamed and laid messily across his tanned face, he was still tall but built from days of fighting alongside the Rym. His gentle brown eyes lit up as the sight of her.

"Esme!" He grinned "My god, look at you. You're basically a woman!"

"Slow down there, Alaric" Her father, Elijah said coming down the stairs "Esme is still my baby girl."

Alaric and Elijah hugged each other, slapping each other on the back. Alaric grew up with Elijah, he was his bestfriend. Neither of them told Esme much about thier childhood, but she could tell it was important to both of them. When he married Leora, he decided to name him the godfather of his kids. Alaric has always been close to Esme, at one point he was more of a father to her than her own.

"I've missed you." Esme smiled, hugging him, her face only reaching to the middle of his chest.

"I've missed you, which is why I came to ask you to come down to Aaron to spin the summer with me. Its the last summer before you're offically an adult." Alaric said. Alaric was a Rym mentor in the city of Aaron, where the Rym lived. He rarely visited the Mentett capital, Esme's home, Angirren anymore.

"I would love to." Esme grinned. Alaric grinned back at her.

"We leave tomorrow." He announced before walking away to talk to Elijah. Esme walked up to her room and decided to change into a tank top and short. Lifting her shirt off, she caught a glimpse of her markings. Every Mentett, once over 16, has angel wings on them. Esm'es was on her neck. She had a tattoo of the word faith above her left hipbone. On her back, however, was a strange marking she had seen nowhere else before. It was a intricate designs of a few lines, and Esme never knew what it was. She never asked her parents. They were more like teachers than parents, and she didn't know what they would say about it.

"Esme!" Leora yelled for her daughter, opening her door. Esme quickly pulled her shorts on and pulled down her tanktop. Esme looked like her mother, they had the same dark brown hair, the same green eyes, and the same pouty lips. Leora had few lines on her face, despite her age, it was as if she was frozen in time.

"Mom." Esme said, her eyebrows scrunched together as Leora took a breath.

"You're dismissed from your lessons today, but I would like to speak to you for a moment."

Esme nodded and sat down on her bed in her room. Her room was simple, milk white walls, white furniture, white bedspread. She had a fuzzy grey blanket throw over her bed, and little things in her room was accented in grey

"I don't think you should go with Alaric, Esme" She spoke up. Esme looked at her wide-eyed as if she was speaking another language.

"What are you talking about, mom? Why?"

"You're doing so well with your studies, and the board was even thinking about placing you with us as soon as you turn 18. I just don't want you to ruin everything we've worked for over one summer." Her mother explained.

In the Mentett society, there is four different generations. The first is the supreme, the highest ranking. They control and lead all. The next is the board, the leaders of Angirren. Her parents are members of the board, and it is expected for her to be as well. The next are just called mentett, but these are the other members that are over 18 that are not on either the board or the supreme. They watch over all groups, and become tutors and mentors. The next are the youth in training, all under 18.

"Mom!" Esme cried, "This is Alaric we are talking about. He will make sure I keep up with my studies, but it is my last summer before adulthood so I am going."

"Think this through, Esme." Her mother said, walking out of her room. Esme rolled her eyes before pulling out her luggage from underneath her bed. She sat in on top of her bed and began to pack everything she may need for the summer.
