Zach and I have been sitting on my couch in my room for a while just talking about anything and everything. He's so easy to talk to. Zach's sitting up while my head rests on his lap while he runs his hands through my long hair.
"So, this isn't my business but is Cody's dad still around?" Zach asked quietly. Sighing, I look up at him through my long eyelashes,
"No. When I found out that I was pregnant with her, I was excited because she was my baby but also devastated because I was only 15 when I got pregnant with her. I thought he was going to back me up with her and say everything was going to be okay but no. When I went to him in tears, He held me and asked what was wrong. I looked at him and stared at him then looked at my stomach. I told him I was pregnant and he quickly got up and started walking around, running his hand through his short hair. Finally, he walked back to me and told me that he couldn't deal with a child at his age. It was something that he couldn't handle and didn't want. So I took the rest of my dignity, of what I had left, and walked down the road to my house. It was like a 5 minute walk from my house to his." I finished off, choking back tears as I ended. I hated thinking about what happened between us.
"Then when she was born, he just showed up at the hospital. He came into the room when I was in labor and tried saying he wanted to be there for his daughter now, that he grown up and could take the responsibility. I told him it wasn't the time to do this, that I was moving and taking Cody with me and to wait out in the waiting room until she was born. Then if I was in the mood I'd talk to him. After Cody was born and everything was okay. I feed her for the first time and she opened her eyes for the first time and we just had this connection. Like, she knew who I was and she knew I'd never abandon her. Finally, her eyes dropped and she was soundly asleep so I called him in and we started talking. I told him everything during the 9 months. Asked him why he didn't wanna be her life during the pregnancy and why he didn't change his mind every time I went to a check up and got pictures. I sent him pictures every time and never got a reply. I told him that we were leaving. I was leaving her with my aunt for a week until we got here and settled everything in. That's when he offered to take her for the week. We talked it out and I said okay. He called his parents and told them to come to the hospital. He never even told them that he had a child until they walked into the room and saw me, then Cody. Yes, they were mad but they were so happy to have a beautiful grandchild. They loved her to death and of course he got in trouble for not being there. Acting like a puss and leaving me like that when he was old enough to have sex but couldn't take the responsibility of having a child. His parents were happy to take her for the week and made sure they would help him with everything. I greatly appreciated it. I told them that they said I could take her home the next day but I wanted a could of days with her because I just had her and they said that it was perfectly fine. A couple days later I dropped Cody off and headed her. When she was supposed to be here, he brought her and told me he loved her and that he wanted to be in his daughters life. I told him no because of what he did to her and me. It's wrong, yeah, but I just couldn't do it. Of course he'll be able to see her when ever he wants, if he wants to but we'll just have to see."
By the time I ended, I was in tears crawled up in a ball, on Zach's lap with my head in his shoulder and him rubbing my back, soothingly. I heard Cody crying so I cleaned myself up and walked into her room. I looked over her crib and saw her, I couldn't help but smile. I picked her up and rocked her to stop crying. She stopped crying easily and I changed her. I turned around to see Zach leaning up against the door frame. I smiled at him and walked over to him.
All of a sudden Zach spoke,
"Can I hold her?" it took my by surprise though.
"Yeah, here." I placed her in his arms and watched as they interacted and couldn't help but wonder what it's be like to have Zach in my daughter's life and mine.
