"Shadows searching for the light." -Journey, Don't Stop Believin'

August 21, 2013

  From that that moment on, Cadence was permitted to sit down next to Ash and listen to his stories. She watched as he genuinely expressed his funny moments and then those subtle, sweet moments. However, at the end of the day, she could always see a slight twinge of disappointment in his eyes when Eve still laid there in her sleeping beauty state.

  It had been six days, tomorrow Ash would go home and enter college once again. However, he decided to switch to a college that was closer to where the hospital was so that he could come every evening to see her.

  Tonight, Ash was finishing up on a story of the time they had went to the Fourth of July fireworks celebration:

  There were sparks of green, gold, blue, pink...We had a great time. And then we went to really close to the concert stage where The Bangles were playing Walk Like An Egyptian. Afterwards, we walked back to my house and spent the rest of the night watching horror movies. You enjoyed it while I was trying hard to bite my hand off! You helped me by staying close but I still screamed for my mom.

  Ash sighed. "I miss you Eve." He whispered and stroked her cheek.

  Cadence looked away and blushed at having watching him show affection for his girlfriend. She shouldn't be here, but Ash had allowed her to stay, without any annoyance or anything. She stood up and stared out at the moon peaking between the leaves of the gigantic maple tree, where the two doves now slept.

  "Let's go for a walk Ash." She said. Ash shook his head. "I'm fine. You can go." Cadence touched his shoulder.

  "Ash. You need to clear your mind. Get some fresh air." She replied and took his hand, tugging him gently to stand up. He sighed and stood up, then allowed her to take him out into the hospital garden.

~~~~~~
  The fresh scent of roses sweetened the warm summer air as the two of them strolled on the cobblestone path of the garden. For a while, they didn't say anything, but Ash suddenly spoke up when they stopped in front of the large tree that was next to Eve's room.
  "Cadence, do you think she'll come back?" He asked and stared up at the tree.
   She wasn't sure how to answer his question. It was like trying to decide whether or not the chicken or the egg came first: There was no answer.
  "I can't tell the future Ash, but I can tell you one thing: You will be happy." She replied.
  "But I won't be--" He started.
  "Without her. I know." She replied a bit harshly than she intended to. She didn't why. I mean, she shouldn't be jealous or anything...
  Ash was taken aback. "What's the matter?" He asked concernedly.
  Cadence brushed it away. "Nothing. Sorry. I've been having a headache." She lied.
 "Then, let's go back inside."
 Cadence stopped him. "I'm fine. In fact, fresh air helps me feel better."
  He stared at her for a moment, his eyes glittering softly under the night sky.They were so focused, so alluring. She quickly looked away and they stood in silence again, listening to the sound of the breeze rustling the leaves of the trees and the soft chirp of the doves.
 "See that nest up there Ash?" She asked and pointed up at the nest that was balanced on the branch closest to Eve's window.
  "Uh...Yes? And your point?" He asked, standing close to me so that he could see.
  Cadence smiled. "It's a dove's nest. Inside that nest, 2 doves are sleeping soundlessly next to each other."
  Ash nodded and wanted me to go on. "See, despite the dangers of the outside world, they're still perfectly content with each other. Their love holds them and that nest together Ash. Stay together, live together. Live together, live forever. I know that sounds really cheesy, but it's my take on things." Cadence shrugged embarrassingly.
   Ash smiled softly. "Ah, so love is the glue which holds us together." Cadence grinned.
  "And it can be the start of a new beginning." Cadence added.
  Ash took her hand and smiled. "You always seem to know what to say don't you?" He whispered.
 "I try my best." She replied shakily, the sudden move surprising her greatly.
 "Thanks...For being by my side this week. Without you I probably would've gone insane." Ash chuckled.
  Cadence laughed. "How? Like talking to the health monitor?"
 "Whoa! Are you a psychic or something? Because that's what I've been thinking."
 "Ash. You are a goofball."
 "Yep. That's my nickname."
  The two of them laughed and made jokes for the rest of the night, with Ash regaining some vigor into his soul. As they walked, Cadence admitted two things:
 She loved this guy
 and
 she silently wished in her heart that Eve would go.
 She was a terrible person.
