Who would have thought that the legendary lake monster of the olden world, Nessie, could actually be one of the oldest living species of dragon! Keeping to the nickname given to its species by the first people, Nessie is an newly re-discovered aquatic dragon. It is neither related to the Plesiosaur nor any ancient whales, this dragon is the descendant of the first dragon, whom can only be found as a fossil, who left the skies for the seas.
Nessie resembles Plesiosaurs, hence the first hypothesis on what this creature was, but are built more like a dolphin is. (Im using the movie The Water Horse monster as a base for this dragon.) It's stubby wings are merely thickly webbed, fin-like fingers that can no more than flail against its large body. Their legs have becomes flippers and their tails have flukes. Their necks are long, and streamlined like the rest of it's body with a small head and a seahorse shaped maw with small jaws at the end of it. Tiny horn-like ears are perfect for hearing underwater and when the dragon surfaces. They have a knobby, fin-like mane running down the back of it's neck and into the dorsal sail that lays on it's back.Nessie's are usualy a variant of aquamarine, dark blue, and teal with patterns similar to those of horses. A male can be distinguished by not only it's small size compared to the female, but the large sail that can come in a variety of bright colors, usualy ruby, gold, or silver. Males also have a set of whiskers to help them detect scents in the water and to catch prey, which are usualy the same color as their sails. Female's sails are smaller and a lighter color than their bodies. An Nessie egg is dark grey with blue tints.
Nessie eggs are laid in a rocky crevice near the shoreline. The egg's shells are thick enough to protect them from most predators, however eels have enough jaw strength to crush the eggs. The young are hatched a month later in low tide so that way they can easily get their first breath of air without having to struggle much. The young then stick together to survive till high tide when the adults come to the shores to hunt the fish there. The young stick to the herds and survive as best as they can. Usually most die before the herds come, and if they come at all.
The young grow up fast, only taking two years to mature into adults. Males usualy split off to form or join other male herds while the females stick with the herd. Every autumn moon they congregate together to reproduce, females laying their eggs the next month in a rocky crevice close to the surface and low tide line.
Nessie's have no abilities other than being able to dive impossible depths and form strong bonds with others of their kind, or those who raised them. These beings are an evolutionary milestone in the study of dragons. Unfortunately there's a lack of knowledge about these dragons due to poachers and game hunters catching, trapping, and killing them for sport, for their skin and fat, and for the collectors that pop up now and then. Dragon mages have created wards and laws in certain areas banning the practice of hunting these dragons to preserve their species. But no matter what, they are inching closer to extinction.
Tips!: Other than telling your local dragon mage the area where you spotted an Nessie dragon, check for signs of nesting or poaching. Either has a huge impact on the survival of the species and dragon mages alike implore you to help prevent their extinction.
