I don't know where to go. The hotel where we stayed, is there any chance they're still there? I don't know, but I have to try. I get there and walk up to the room where we stayed and knock on the door. Nothing. Crap, they've all ready left. Great, now what? I walk down to the lobby and take a seat in one of the armchairs. I try to remember if they said anything about when they would leave. Strait away or where they going to wait? For what? It's a pretty long drive to San Diego from here so they probably left right after I said goodbye to Danny. I sigh and put my hands in the pockets of the hoodie I'm wearing. I feel something, and pull it out. It's a folded note, and I unfold it. A number. A cellphone number, that's right! Oh my God how could I forget, Danny gave me his number right before we said goodbye. I stand up and walk up to the desk.
"Hi, can I borrow the phone, please?" I ask the lady behind the desk.
"What room number do you have?" she asks and look at me with a careful look. I can't really blame her, I must look like crap. I tell her the number and she hits a few buttons on her computer. "Sorry miss, there is no one staying in that room."
"But I just left, can I please borrow it? I just have to make one call."
"I'm sorry, I can't allow you to do that."
I sigh and walk through the doors. I don't got any change with me so what to do? I spot a phone booth but as I said, no money. So I start asking people. A lot of them just ignore me, maybe they think I'm gonna rob them, but then a sweet little lady lets me have a couple of coins. I thank her and walk up to the phone booth. The signals are going, I count to six of them before someone answers.
"Hello?" he says in his Irish accent.
"Hi, it's Carrie" I say as fast as I can. I don't know how long the money will do. "Where are you?"
"Carrie, hi, how are you?"
"I'm fine, where are you?"
"We're just leaving for San Diego, just left a minute ago. What's up?"
"Look, the parents just... They're crap. I can't stay with them. I know it's so stupid and like, I made it before, but... I don't know. What should I do?" I look out the window and try not to start crying. Everything feels so hopeless. Then I stop something that simply could not miss. A big, black bus drives past. I get a glimpse of the driver, and recognize him immediately. It's the boys driver. Then the phone dies. I look at the screen, panicked. No money left. Crapcrapcrap. I drop the phone and start to run towards the bus that already are on it's way. I bump into people on the sidewalk, and they are slowing me down, so I get out on the part between the road and the sidewalk. The bus can't go very fast and so I slowly but surely get up next to it. Now the black windows become a problem since I can't see anything. I don't know if they see me or not, so all I can do is run and hope they see me. I start to get really tired, but suddenly the bus stops and as do I, in pure surprise. They immediately gets honks from the other cars, but the doors open and Danny look out. "Carrie, here, come on!" he gesture me to get inside so I get over there and get in. I hear the doors close behind me and the bus jilts forward. I always fall over, but grab Danny's arm at the last second.
"Wow, easy there" he smiles. "What's up?"
I sigh. "They just... You where right. I thought I could do this but I'm so confused. And so I ran away and now I don't know what to do. You where right, I need to..." I'm not sure what I need. I've never felt more like a mess before.
Danny pulls me into a hug and I breath in his scent. A silent tear runs down my cheek, but I wipe it away. Then we pull apart and Danny takes my face between his hands and look into my eyes. "It will be fine. I promise. Okay?"
I nod. "Yeah... But now what? I have nowhere to go."
"Well, you'll stay with us." Danny says as if it's the most certain thing in the world.
"What? Like, come with you to San Diego?"
"Yeah!" he says, all excited. "We're going to this festival, you can come and just hang out. See the shows and have a good time. Get your mind off thing!"
"That does sound nice..." It really is what I need and the last couple of days have been pretty hard. It would be so nice to just not care and listen to some music. Get some distanse. "But are you sure it's okay for the other guys?"
"Yeah, they don't mind. You wont do any trouble, right?"
"No. Okay then." I smile. For the first time in a while I have something to look forward to. "But, err... Can I borrow your phone, please? I think I need to call Mr. and Mrs. Brown and just tell them that I'm with you."
"Okay" he pulls it out of his pocket "here you go."
"Thanks"
"I'll be with the crew, you'll come in to us after you're done, right?"
"Yep."
He walks through the door that separates the driver from the rest of the bus and I take a seat in the retractable chair. While call too find out their number I look out the window. We're out of the city and now there's big houses with gardens on each side of the road. "Hey, Mrs. Brown, it's Carrie. Yes, I'm sorry... No, I'm fine. I just want to tell you that I will go away for a couple of days. I'm okay, I will call you when I get back. No there's just... Exactly. Okay, tell Mr. Brown I said hi. Okay, bye." I hang up and walk through the door, to the other guys. Everybody is basically sitting in the sofas, chillin. I spot Mark and Danny, and I also see a couple of other people a bit further in. Danny stands up. "Everybody, this is Carrie. Carrie this is John, Charles, Marcus, Mark which you already know, and Ben. They're doing lights, sound, Marcus help us set everything up on stage, Ben is playing bass and Mark is a full time drinker." We laugh and I shake hands with everyone. "And also, in here..." Danny says, as we walk past the beds to the back "this is Glen, as you know, and Rodney, who plays keyboard when we're live."
We say nice too meet you and hi again, and then Danny and Glen get caught up in a conversation about something on Glens laptop, so I walk back to the other guys and take a seat. I'd lie if I said I wasen't at least a tad bit nervous.
"Hey, Carrie, want some tea? We got some over there." Mark says and points to the little kitchen. I nod and stand up, get a cup and fill it, before I walk back.
"I don't know if Danny have told you, we're going to this festival in San Diego..."
"Yeah, he mentioned it."
"Okay, yeah. You got like a six hour drive to look forward to so get comfortable."
"Okay." I sit back and pull up my knees. After a while I hear a giggle and look up, just to see everybody staring at me.
"What" I say, confused.
"You're basically drooling over Ben's headphones" the guy I think is John says with a laughter. I clear my head and realize that I've been staring at Ben's head, or more his headphones, the entire time.
"Hey, you wanna borrow these?" Marks says and grabs a pair of dr. Dre headphones and throw them to me. "They're Danny's, I don't think he mind."
"Sure, thanks" I say and unlock Danny's iPod that already was attached to the headset. I put on the headphones and block out most of the conversation. Then I scroll through and find Drops of Jupiter by Train. I look out the window and see the landscape pass by while the tunes goes into my ears and massage my brain. This is just what I need. I haven't realized how much I actually missed music these past couple of days. When the riff comes, a perfect harmony between guitars, piano and drums, I can really relax. This is just what I need.
