"Ahh" Sam sighed.
It's so nice to be able to just sit down and not worry about being murdered once in a while he thought, as he relished in the rare occasion he got a day off the job. He stood up to fix something to eat and got the familiar feeling of someone right behind him. Expecting the worst, he spun around to see Cas sitting at the table.
"Cas you are gonna give me a heart attack one of these times. What are you doing here?" He asked.
"I was just... Dropping by." Cas said hesitantly.
Sam cocked his brow.
"From my experience angels don't just 'drop by'" he said, feeling uneasy. "Why did you come?"
Cas paused and appeared more interested in studying the floorboards than looking at Sam. Finally he said jokingly, "I got lonely."
Sam chuckled suspiciously, but decided to brush it off "Oh okay. Dean should be in soon he was just working on the car a bit."
As if on cue, Dean waltzed in moments later. He had his t shirt draped over his shoulder and he took it off to wipe some dirt off his hands. His muscles flexed with every movement and after being in the sun so long his tan skin glistened with sweat. Cas looked up suddenly, and his cheeks flushed noticeably.
"Hey Sammy, hey..Cas?" Dean looked at Sam questioningly, probably wondering the same thing Sam had when Cas first arrived. Sam shrugged and he went on opening the fridge grabbing a cold beer.
"H-hi Dean" Cas sputtered nervously. Dean, once again confused by Castiel's unusual behavior glanced at Sammy as if asking "what's his deal?". All of a sudden Cas stood up and said
"I'll be right back-" and ducked into the hallway towards the bathroom. Before he could shut the door Sam caught a glimpse of the angel's giant wings bursting out into their full capacity. Dean didn't see what Sam just had, but still asked the same thing he was thinking:
"Okay... What's up with Cas?"
Good question he thought.
That night Cas slept on a pullout couch and woke up with Dean gone to pick up breakfast and him alone with Sam who you can imagine, had some questions. He sat up and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes to find sam sitting across from him.
"Morning Cas." Sam said in a way that immediately gave away the fact he had other things to talk about.
"Good morning." He replied.
"So uhh.. Is everything okay? I mean... What's really going on?" Castiel couldn't meet his eyes and didn't answer.
"I want the truth this time. " Sam pressed. Castiel felt his cheeks flush.
"I-I-I uhh.." Cas stammered, clearly flustered. He sighed and looked at Sam nervously.
"Okay look. The reason I came here is because I uhh.. I have been experiencing strange things having to do with my wings. You might be able to help me."
Sam was intrigued and a little worried. Was Cas okay?
"What do you mean by that?"
"Well you see.. It's never happened to me before but lately it's been occurring more often. Especially when.. Uhh.." Cas paused and looked mortified. If it was possible his face got even redder. "... When Dean is around."
Sammy was throughly confused. Suddenly it dawned on him as if he had been hit by a truck.
"So you.. - WAIT DO YOU MEAN...??????" Sam exclaimed jumping up.
"YES OKAY OKAY I KNOW NOW THANK YOU!" Cas buried his face in his hands in embarrassment. " I don't mean it to happen! They just.. Pop out!! What am I supposed to do?"
Sam could not stop laughing. He didn't believe what he was hearing. What was Cas going to do? I mean unlike other things it's quite difficult to hide huge wings popping out when he got a little over excited.
"I always knew you had a thing for-!" He began but then, as if God himself had looked upon this moment and felt it necessary to add a little extra something, Dean walked in clutching carry out bags that smelled of pancakes and sausage. Sam snorted trying to stifle his laughter and Cas gave him an icy look that could freeze hell over. He then stood up quickly, announced that he had to go and vanished. Dean glanced at where Cas had been sitting and then back at Sam.
"Okay what the hell is going on?"
Sam paused. Should he tell him? Cas would be so embarrassed... But then again Dean did deserve to know. He decided to tell Dean about what took place before he walked in, trying not to giggle as he watched Dean's face flush a shade deeper with every word. A sly grin spreads across Sammy's face.
"Sooo...-"
"Oh shut up!" Dean says, staring at his shoes. Sam's laugh sent Dean to hide in the other room to pretend this conversation did not just happen.
Late in the afternoon the next day, Castiel showed up unexpectedly.
"Sam! You didn't uh tell Dean about uh what I told you.. Right?" He says worriedly. Sam looks up from his laptop and instead of answering he gives him a small apologetic yet mischievous smile that says it all without saying a thing. Cas' face goes from worried to horrified in .3 seconds flat.
"How could you-!" Cas started, but was cut off when Sam abruptly stood. Cas turned and saw Dean leaning in the doorway looking at the floor. He sent Sam an hard glare.
"Well I have to go.. Do... Something." He said awkwardly, and walked out the door suppressing a giggle. Dean looked up at Cas as the car started outside and sped off. His smile was shy but there was something else about it that Cas couldn't place. His palms started to sweat and he couldn't look at him directly.
"So.. You heard about.. The.. Yeah." Cas floundered. He had never been so wracked with nerves and tension. Dean stepped towards him and his smile became a grin. He laughed softly.
"Yeah Sam told me everything." Dean said looking down again. Cas started to explain but when Dean looked back up his eyes stopped him dead. Somehow they had gotten close enough to hear his steady calm breath but he didn't care. He stared into deans eyes and saw something magic. Something that no one else had ever looked at him with and he was suddenly aware of what he couldn't place behind that shy smile. Love. Their hearts ached with it and it pulsed into ever ounce of their bodies but he never broke deans gaze. Their eyes held for what seemed like eternity, before he felt his wings softly unfold behind him. This was it.
This was the moment everything would change.
