Ophelia walked out of her last class of the day. She was only in college to get it done with, and she could never decide what she was going to end up doing.
She loved plants. Since her sophomore year of high school, she kept cacti and succulents on her windowsill. So being a botanist was one of her hopeful paths, but she was also quite creative so music and art paths were possibly down the road.
The sidewalk was paved only about 5 yards from the dorms, so she walked to her dorm room to drop off her things and change to get ready for work.
She took off her black crop top, military jacket, and black leggings and put on a white henley, some skinny jeans and her apron. She worked at a florist cart about a mile off campus, on the outer south of the square.
It was usually slow, mainly couples or guys getting their lover some roses. They sold succulents and cacti, so they would get the occasional teen or young adult looking at those, but that was once in a blue moon.
But today was different. A girl came along wearing a denim jacket with a The 1975 tee underneath, ripped black skinny jeans, and combat boots. She had hair cropped right above her shoulders that was so platinum it was practically white-grey. She looked like a walking tumblr aesthetic.
She picked up a baby cactus and a succulent from the cart shelf and put it on the counter. Right after she put them on there, she grabbed a single red rose and placed it next to the other plants.
"Hi there! Will this be all for you today?" Ophelia asked, due to her strict script her boss gave her.
"Yep! Wait, do you know where the closest book store is? I know there's one in the square but I'm new to town and this is a fairly big square." The girl asked. She was obviously a new college student, because the campus was small.
It was just dorms and school buildings with a few little things like a 30x30 foot library and a convenience store. Everyone wanted a bigger library, so they went to the bookstore in the square.
"Oh! There's one to the left in the dead center of the strip. Thanks for buying from us!" Ophelia said, yet again from her script.
"Thanks!" The girl said, running off like she was off to do something urgent. It was probably a study group.
Ophelia's shift was over at 5pm, and after that she changed and went her second job, the coffee shop in the square, coincidentally 2 stores over from the bookstore.
Ophelia had a busy schedule. She didn't have classes on the weekends so she would work 9 to 5, and had off of classes and work on Wednesdays. She was okay with it though, because she had more time off than she did in high school.
She went back to her dorm room and changed into her other apron and a visor. She didn't have a roommate, because she liked privacy and didn't want someone barging in on her doing something weird.
Ophelia ran out the door to get back to the square. She walked in seconds before she would be late.
"Hey Ophie! Just on time." Ophelia's coworker Violet called out. She hated being called Ophie, but she was used to it. There really wasn't a nickname for Ophelia.
Ophelia's shift was from 5:15 to 10:15, and the girl from the flower cart showed up at 10 PM. This time, she got a closer look at her. She had blue-grey eyes and rainbow 1/4 inch plugs.
"Hey! Are you the girl from the flower cart?" The mystery girl asked.
"Yeah! It's a small world isn't it?" Ophelia said. She was never good with anything grammar wise and said things in the wrong situations.
The girl nodded off awkwardly and blushing and ordered her drink.
"I'll have a green tea and a piece of banana bread."
"Will that be it? Also, I love your plugs." Ophelia said, yet again sticking to her programmed dialogue.
"Thank you!" The girl answered smiling, looking down and biting her lip.
"So what's your name?"
"Juno."
Juno sat down and waited for her drink. Ophelia was blushing and staring at the girl. She was blindingly beautiful to her, and the fact that she was at least an ally made it that much better.
She gave her her drink and left her shift. Ophelia ended up walking out at the same time as Juno, and they talked a little bit.
"Hey, thanks for complementing my plugs. Whenever I wear these all I get are dirty looks from old women." Juno said, looking at Ophelia's name tag.
"Ha, no problem. Always love finding someone else in the community." Ophelia replied, trying to hide how hard she was blushing.
"Are you gay too?"
"I'm actually bisexual, just more attracted to girls. Only 2 of my 6 relationships have been with guys." Ophelia explained. She never really talked about her sexuality, because she grew up in a conservative area and had to keep it quiet. That was the main reason that she moved to a college farther away.
"I feel you. Would you want to meet for coffee or something? Since I just moved here I've been looking for friends. Do you go to the university down the road too?" Juno communicated, obviously excited.
"Yeah. It's my second year here, and I still have no clue what I wanna do."
"I transferred over here after some bad shit, but we can explain that later." Juno said, handing Ophelia her number.
She continued, "See you at the coffee shop when you're available." and she was obviously flirting.
