"How can you kill a monster without becoming one?"

I stood at the end of the hall and knocked on the door. No answer. I knocked again, this time a little bit louder. Still nothing. I quietly twisted the knob and entered the room.

There he was. Just sitting on the bed, silent and still. How was he so calm? I hated him for it. His silhouette cast on the bed by the afternoon sun. I stepped towards him. Creak

I froze and cringed at the sound. But when I looked up, he was in the exact same position. My anger swelled in my chest. How could he be so peaceful after everything he had done?

I walked around the bed to face him. His eyes were trained on the window. It was only after I took out my pistol that he acknowledged my presence.

"Are you here to kill me darlin'?" He asked. His face showed neither concern nor remorse, just a numb look of amusement.

He use to be a young, handsome man, but his years now showed in lines, wrinkles, and blue eyes that could burn your soul if you looked at them too long.

At that point I was filled with more hatred than ever before. I brought the pistol between his eyes and pulled back the hammer.

He began to laugh hysterically. Suddenly, he stopped.

"You know, darlin', I remember when I took you in. You told me to make you strong..." He paused and smirked. He studied my face as if it were a beautiful masterpiece he had created, examining every inch.

"And that's exactly what I did." He saw the stunned look on my face and laughed like a madman. What he said shocked me. I couldn't take it anymore.

Within a couple of seconds, he fell back on the bed, a crooked smile frozen on his face.

Someone asked me once, "How can you kill a monster without becoming one?" Then, I thought I knew the answer. But now I know, you have to become a monster to rid the world of a worse one.

A/N

I know this one was really dark and I haven't done one in a while, but I'm working on getting a new prompt up every week to help my writing get better. This one turned out a bit darker than I expected. If you have any thoughts on improvements, please comment! Thanks!
