Chapter 1

400 b.c.

Serena peeked her head around the back of the house. She just had to make sure that the guards weren't patrolling. No girl was supposed to be caught out of the house. Especially at night.

She could not see, nor hear the metal armor, so she bolted for the barn.

"Run, run, run!" Serena thought. "They can't catch me! RUN!"

She found safety in the dark shadows of an empty horse stall.

"Took you long enough." Katiana said, while stepping into the tiny sliver of moonlight.

"I'm sorry. I-I was nervous." Serena said, trying  to look anywhere but Katiana.

"Common. We are going tonight." Katiana stated simply.

  "I-I can't! I-"

"You what? Would rather stay with Anteclese, the abusive husband? Stay with the unappreciative, bratty children? When you could have immortality! It's what we've always dreamed of, Dakota! We would be just like the gods!"

Serena's hand instinctively fluttered to her cheekbone, where there always was a bruise. It was her husbands favorite place to hit. A small tear rolled down her cheek. Katiana had also called her by the name that the oracles called her.

Katiana knew what she had to say to get her to come, and she had said it.

Serena gave Katiana a firm nod. The two young women of Sparta set off to go find the island called Delphi.
