Chapter 30

Ivy’s POV

“Race you around the island!” I called out to Cole.

“Oh, you’re so on!” he called back.

I smiled as we drove the jet skis to the ‘starting line’, also known as the old, abandoned dock at the other end of the cove. Cole and I had played guitar till about noon before heading up to the house to grab a bite to eat before changing into bathing suits to race the jet skis.

We were both very competitive so we always made little races. I usually always won, but I figured Cole probably let me win most of them so as not to hurt my feelings.

“One!” he yelled.

“Two!” I called out, rising my a$$ off the ski as I held my trembling thumb over the gas. I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins as I waited for the signal to go.

Cole and I looked over at each other, cheesy smiles on our faces as we both screamed out in unison, “Three!”

Cole being Cole, gunned the ski and sped off in front, but I had done this so often that I knew how the ski worked. Instead of holding the gas completely down, I slowly eased the lever down, gaining speed as I went. I hunched over the front of the ski, reminding me of my horseback riding days, as I caught a wave.

The wind was whipping across my face, causing tears to stream down my cheeks. My hair was whipping around in its ponytail, slapping me across the neck. I was slowly gaining on Cole, so I gave the ski one more push before holding the gas completely down.

I laughed as I got the last burst of speed I needed. I caught a wave, and quite literally, flew past Cole. Turning my head, I laughed at Cole’s shocked face. He must have really been trying to win this one. I stuck my tongue out and turned back around, steering the ski around the island as we raced back to the start/finish line.

I looked down at my speed. 64. 65. 66.

“Come on, baby, come on,” I whispered, urging the ski to find one more ounce of power. I glanced over my right shoulder and saw Cole right next to me. He was catching me as we neared the finish. Only a few yards left and we were now nose to nose as I hunched over the ski, wishing for that final surge of speed.

66. 67.

It seemed to be stuck at 67 miles an hour for it wasn’t increasing. I growled in frustration, glancing up only to see a huge wave in front of us. I was caught off guard when Cole and I caught the wave together. It was like slow motion as I saw Cole next to me. I had not been able to prepare for the wave so I ended up bouncing around, causing me to lose some speed.

Cole took the advantage and barely crossed the finish in front of me, but it was enough. I released the gas, the ski slowing down. Cole was up ahead, his arms in the air. He pumped the air with his fist as he stood on the ski, making it rock back and forth dangerously. I laughed as he shook his a$$ at me, sticking his tongue out.

“Fine, fine, you win. Good job,” I said as he drove the ski to idle next to mine.

“Yeah, you too. I’m kinda thirsty. Wanna head back to the house?” he asked me.

I nodded as we both turned the skis and headed back, laughing and talking about the wave we caught.
