I walk around high school practically invisible, there is at least one girl like me at everyones school. The short girl in the oversized hoodie with her nose in a book, the girl that keeps to herself unless you catch her in those moments with her friends where it is like the curtains have been pulled back and the sun finally shines in. I'm the girl that only opens her mouth if she is certain she knows the answer.
Right now I'm at lunch with my small group of friends. There is only six of us, Emma, Adele, Anneleise, Erin, Maddison, and me, Lendynn. We sit in the crowded cafeteria around circular tables and complain to each other about our first half of the day.
Emma is currently talking about her horrible math teacher, " She never teaches us anything! I'm normally teaching the class."
"Emma we've heard this everyday for the passed two months, we get it." Erin sighs.
The thing about my friends is I'm the outsider, all my friends are the girls that are stretched between friend groups but they're surprisingly loyal to this table.
Emma Crawford is the one who all the guys are silently crushing on. She's tall with short blonde hair and bangs, she literally looks good in everything she wears. She has a personality that makes you can't help but love her.
Anneleise Langston is into books but not quite as much as I am. She's short and has dirty blonde hair, she always wears her hair down and she dresses nice. She wears makeup and loves Game of Thrones. She has the worst british accent even though she was born in the UK.
Erin Smith is the tallest with black hair and an athletic frame. Erin's a dancer and she's amazing at it. She's the mom of the group and normally takes our phones during lunch so we don't get to consumed and can actually have a conversation.
Maddison Hill is a soccer player like me, she's outgoing and very friendly. She isn't afraid to open her mouth to make a comment. My favorite thing about her is this little smile she gets when she wants to say something. Maddi has a volume based sense of humor, basically if you aren't laughing at her joked you obviously didn't hear her.
Adele Ramsey is the one piece of the table that is stretched the farthest with so many friends in so many places. She has dark hair and is tall, she plays for the school volleyball team. Our favorite thing to do is randomly change the language to French because we're both in French 2, Anneleise can follow for awhile but everyone gets confused quickly.
Lastly there is me, Lendynn James. I'm petite not short, redheaded (if you want to call it that), and attached to every hoodie I own. I'm the center defender on the JV soccer team, if you ever go to one of the games you'd be surprised I could yell that loud. I have a sarcastic sense of humor that makes me sound rude, most of my comebacks come from my favorite books if they don't come from there they're most likely from Marvel movies. I don't get dressed up unless I absolutely have to, my everyday outfit is a pair of light jeans, random t-shirt that no one will see, a hoodie, and my well worn white Doc Martins.
We don't have much time before we turn to head to class, we all get up and head out separate ways. I go to the library to start Library Aide, today I'm reshelving books. I grab the cart of books waiting to be brought back home and put in my headphones. I love the satisfaction of putting books back in their place and the idea that the job is meant for one person. At this point I may sound very antisocial but I promise I'm not. I might not like meeting people but if they talk to me I'll put on a smile and respond.
The cart is almost empty halfway through the period when I fell a tap on the shoulder, I pull out my left headphone and turn to stare into the annoyed eyes of the interruption of my peace. "What?" I ask, "You do know that there is someone at checkout that can help you right?"
"Yes I do but you were closer. Hey you're the girl in my AP Human Geography class! I had no idea you knew how to speak." He must be blind because everything about me screams I don't want to be in this conversation.
"Sorry to disappoint, not an avox." With that I turn back to the shelves.
"A what?" He looks confused.
"An avox? It's from The Hunger Games, their people that were punished by the capitol and had their tongues cut out." I explain.
"But I've seen the Hunger Games movies, all of them and it never says anything about these, what are they called?"
"Avoxes. They were everywhere in the movies you just didn't pay attention."
"Oh really?" His eyes light up at the sight of a challenge. "Where were they?"
"Pollux was an avox he was in Mockingjay part 1 and 2, brother of Castor. Every time they lived in the tribute tower, Hunger Games and Catching Fire, they were they servants that stood to the side with the masks over their faces." I finish proud that I did that from memory, Hunger Games wasn't my favorite series of all time if you want to keep it simple. I need to get back on track. "That conversation wasn't needed, now what do you want?"
I hear him mumble, "Bipolar much?" At that I raise my eyebrows at him. "I came to ask where a book was."
"You've got to be a bit more specific we are in a library." He grins at my comment, but I turn my attention away from him wanting to get my job done, I don't want more work for the next person with my job.
"I have a book project in ELA over dystopias, and I was wondering what books you would recommend." With that I almost fell over laughing. I don't just recommend one book I give my friends never ending lists that there is no way they could finish.
"What day is it? Is it A day or B day?"
"A day."
"Ok. How about I give you a small list with descriptions tomorrow in AP Human Geo and you can figure it out from there?"
"A list? How many books will be on this list?" Before I could answer the bell rang I slowly push the cart back to its place behind the checkout desk. Grabbing my backpack I turn around to find he followed me.
"Saved by the bell," I mumble while heading to class.
