Of all the things her class could study it just had to be ancestry. For the past few years Helga had been able to get away with skipping this topic, but now that she was eleven there was no way for her to avoid it.
Her father had been an accident. When Helga's grandmother told her boyfriend, he suddenly had a job offer in France. Her grandmother died giving birth to her father. So naturally Helga knew nothing about her father's side of the family.
And her mother, well, she was on the secretive side and refused to discuss her family until Helga's birthday that year. Oh what on earth was she going to do? Her teacher most certainly would not let her away with skipping this assignment.
On her walk home from school Helga went down to the river, to try clear her head. For some unknown reason the gently flowing water always calmed her. As well as giving her an urge for the lavatory. But the river was frozen and the ground was icy. The leaves on the trees were were dusted in crisp white frost and snow was gracefully falling from the sky.
Of course, how could she forget? Snow had been predicted on the news. Helga sighed loudly, her breath melting a small patch of snow on the tree she was leaning on. Reluctantly hoisting her school bag onto her shoulder and wishing she had worn her gloves and scarf she began the long walk home. It seemed as if the day couldn't get any worse. First the project, freezing fingers and to top it all off Helga had smiled at a passing good looking boy and then walked right into an icy pole!
When she finally got home the biggest surprise of her life awaited her just beyond the door.
