Dear Emilia,
Lately, everything feels different. My feelings for you for example. Before, all I saw you as was a friend. Then, you became my best friend. We've shared some amazing moments together that I will never forget. But lately I've noticed, that every time my eyes land on you I'm mesmerized. Sometimes it's your smile, other times your eyes. And the things you say don't help either, you're so intelligent, in fact I can honestly say that you're the most intelligent, honest, and caring person I've ever had the fortune of meeting. Emilia, I think I'm in love with you, madly in love. And I'm certain you feel the same. These things... I could only write down because I fear that you will reject me. So, please call me once you read this, I want to be with you.
Love,
Ryan.
"Great... Looks like we've got ourselves our first suspect." Detective Williams said, as he held the letter in his hand. He stood there with his jet black hair blowing in the wind that was coming through the open window of the 5th avenue apartment building. The streets outside were buzzing and filled with people, it was 8:00 pm, the time when most people left work and went to go grab drinks at the various bars splattered across Manhattan.
"You know, you can't just blurt these things out until you're certain, detective. Hand me the letter."
"I do not blurt, miss. Khan."
She smiled. "But you're blurting right now."
"Can the two of you stop arguing and continue searching? We are not here for chit chat; we are here to investigate the murder of an innocent woman."
"I apologize."
"I do not." Zara gave her colleague the fakest smile she could conjure.
Damian Williams shut his eyes in frustration. Of course she's not sorry. Just remember Damian, if she keeps this up she'll lose her job! And you will be a lone ranger once again.
"Officer Bo, what I was saying, before Miss. Khan rudely interrupted me, was that this letter could lead us to the first suspect. He mentions in the letter, that he has... Or rather had, feelings for Emilia. And also mentions the fact that they were best friends and she was to call him after receiving the letter."
"Them being best friends is not a fact, you idiot. Also, how do you know the writer is a male?" Zara's eyes widened. "What if... She wasn't even his or her's friend and she wanted out... What else does it say in the letter?"
Damian took a deep breath and read the letter out loud.
"Oh yeah, she definitely was not interested in this buffoon."
"How could you possibly know that?"
"Her apartment is clean, other than... you know, her dead body over there and the pool of blood accompanying it. Also, judging by the books on her shelf, looks like she's wasn't into straight romance novels If this suspect is in fact a male. And lastly, I found a picture of her and a woman kissing in her bedroom, it was hidden, I found it in her wardrobe."
"You could've started your statement with the last thing you said and it would've been enough. Also, she could've been bisexual."
"Yes, Damian... But, there's also something on the back of that photograph that says, Julie, the love of my life les and proud." Zara held the picture up between her index and middle finger and smirked.
"Oh..."
"Yeah."
She turned to the police officer, "Did they find anything on her cell phone? Track every man or woman on her phone by the name of Ryan."
"I'm on it. Thank you Detectives." The officer left the crime scene leaving Zara and Damian together, unattended.
"So... You had to steal my job."
"Miss. Khan, I didn't steal your job. I prefer working alone anyway, but we were paired by Evan and that's not my fault, you can talk about this with him, but I already talked to him and he said this is how it will be for a while. So, I suggest you adjust to the situation."
She sighed, "Whatever, I'm too hungry to have this conversation right now. I'll be back in a bit."
"You can't just leave! There's a dead woman on the floor."
"Why? Are you afraid she'll turn into a zombie? Come on detective, that's a bit childish, even for you." With that, she walked over the dead body and out the door. Leaving Damian alone at the crime scene.
