There's no more war. There's no poverty, no crooked governments, no national health care, no gangs, and no more terrorist threats. The world is at peace. Maybe that's because I am the last human. Everyone else mysteriously died off. Most of the bodies just disappeared. So I'm here eating fancy meals(well the first month i was, just canned goods now), driving the fanciest cars(until they are out of gas), and just living wherever i choose. My tall, average figure turned into a tall and fit one. Running from wolves and bears and such. When there were people, I would always want to be alone. 3 years later, I miss the touch of a person.I never really thought that'd be something I would say.
Slowly I adapted to things, I learned many skills I never thought I would need. It was a very normal day when things took a turn: cloudy, comfortable out, I mainly stayed in the upper-middle of the United States. I drove up to this cabin, very nice place. 1 bedroom with 1 bathroom, perfect for me. Electricity had been out since the 3rd day so I did random tasks daily and used generators to power music playing devices. This cabin, lucky enough, was solar powered. I didn't watch movies really, played almost every video game I liked until I beat it, and all the TV shows I liked I had already seen all of. What annoyed me most was that everyone disappeared 2 weeks before the new Doctor Who was to come on. Talking about a cliffhanger, that was just awful. So 7 series of the modern one had to suit me and it did. I adapted from wearing what looked good to what was more useful to wear in different conditions. I really spent most of my time goofing off and thinking on what happened. Ruled out aliens seeing they would've got me too. Never really came up with anything solid, just mainly thought about the disappearances.
One night things took the turn for the absolute worst. I was in the cabin, alone. Never cared for pets really, they always died in the end. I was just listening to music when there was a tapping at the door of the cabin. I got up and walked to the door, thinking maybe it was just a stick or something on the roof. God knows that the trees around there dropped limbs all the time. I walked towards the door, getting colder with each step. Little did I know I would regret what would happen.
Cautiously I reached for the knob, and when my hand touched it I jumped back. The doorknob was ice cold. I took my shirt off and wrapped my hand and tried again. As I reached for the knob again, I started shaking. The air grew colder each second and the exact moment my hand grasped the knob, the door shook wildly. I turned the knob and yanked open the dark door just to be thrown backwards. I landed flat on my back, knocking the air out of me. The air reeked of dead skin and everything went pitch black.
At first I thought I was hallucinating, but when what felt like hands kept running over my body, it was impossible. I tried to move but then whatever had entered the room shoved all its weight down on me. Then I felt it breath on my face. The rancid breath made me want to throw up right then but I held it down, not knowing when this creature would get off me I could drown in my own vomit.
"Join us Evan...... join us" said the low, scratchy voice. The voice sounded like it would come from that sort of creature we all feared when we were children, the monster under the bed that would steal us if we weren't under our covers, and it was on top of me.
"Not without a fight" I yelled at the top of my lungs. I started moving my body to try to escape. The thing on top of me just kept pressing down on me, repeating "Join us" every chance it got. Suddenly its grip loosened and I threw it off of me, its skin feeling as hard as cement and as cold as the iceberg that struck the Titanic. I jumped up and ran for the door, hoping the thing behind me wasn't prepared for this. I stumbled when I got outside, night air cool but I could see again. When I glanced back into the cabin I saw It getting up. Whatever it was, it wanted me dead. And I couldn't allow that.
