My whole body hurts, almost as if I'd been set on fire. Everything is dark and I feel weightless in this vast void. 'Who am I, where am I? I can't remember anything.' There's a light coming in from above me, and a trickle of water behind me. I can now feel cold hard ground beneeth me. '"Wake up!" 'I have to wake up! But I feel at peace here, I should stay and let the darkness envelope me.' "Kinsteran get up now!" 'But I'm conferrable here, I don't want to move.' "Have you forgotten our agreement, get up and move now Kinsteran!"
My feet are moving on there own accord, my eyes still seem heavy but I have to open them. The world is so much brighter than the darkness I was just in. I blink several times to clear my sight, I'm surrounded by a gray stone that appears to have been chiseled into a cave. On my left is the trickle of water I heard, water is running down the cave wall and collecting into a clear pool at ground level.
Stepping cautiously I look into the pool of water, and a dark blue fox looks back at me. My eyes, there different colors. One is sapphire blue, but my left eye is a golden amber with a scar over it (how did that get there). A light chuckle comes from behind, I turn to see who it came from.
"So you're still alive, I've always heard that fox spirits were hard to kill." The silky smooth voice of a white two tailed wolf with emerald eyes.
'She has two tails like me.' She sits in front of me before continuing, "You look confused, don't you remember me Kinsteran?" 'Am I supposed to?' "I see, you don't remember after all. Your ability let's you heal fast but apparently it doesn't have the same effect on your memory."
There's a weird glint in her eyes. "I guess I'll have to help you with that then. What, cat got you're tongue?"
"H-how-ow do I-I know I can tru-st yo-ou?" My throat feels like its on fire, and my voice is raspy. 'What happened to me.' I turn back to the water and without thinking I plunge my snout in and start gulping down the cool crisp water I pull back out of the water now that my burning pallet has been soothed. I cough twice then turn back to the she-wolf. "What is your name? How do you know me?" The she-wolf closes her eyes then sighs, she looks back at me. "My name is Inserentra, how I know you is of little consequence right now. Maybe another time."
I tilt my head in confusion and move my ears forward. 'Why is she avoiding my question.' "Then why am I here?" She chuckles again and her emerald eyes continue to sparkle.
"Well, since you don't remember I'll give you a history lesson."
**********
"Centuries ago a young nine tailed fox was born, this fox was both of the spirit and the physical plains. He was a shape shifter, many speculate he was the first spirit shifter. However, he was an animal through and through. He had no human counter part. The humans took to calling him the first Kitsune, or spirit fox. He took the name Ghost, for none could ever catch or find him unless he chose them to.
With his many tails and ability to walk in two worlds at once he soon discovered that he had vast power. He could bring the animals from the spirit plains and give them another chance in the physical plains. He had the ability to turn invisible and would often sneek into the homes of the humans.
He would always watch a family from afar for several days before approaching them. In the dead of night after the family was asleep, he would sneek into the room of the youngest child. There he would bestow an animal spirit on to them, in exchange for this new life the spirits swore to watch over the children until there dying breath.
After a few decades Ghost was no longer needed as the spirit shifters were finally a clan of there own. Able to reproduce new shifters without the aid of Ghost. However Ghost still feared for the shifters that had become his family, so in order to protect them further so that they would never have to fall pray to the corruption of humanity. He built shelters and refuges across the known land that only spirits and spirit shifters could enter.
