Chapter 1: Meeting Mysterious Miles
"Now, now children. As you know there was an accident including a scientist and his wife last week. Poor Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery passed away last night and so now we'll be gaining a new passenger on our road to new life. Little Miles Montgomery will be arriving tomorrow afternoon and I want you all on your best behavior. I think you all know how he must be feeling. Coming to a foster home is not happy but we need to make him feel as at home as possible." Miss Julia explains to all of us. My friend Maya and I are in the back of the room playing a game of cat's cradle. We've all heard this lecture tons of times. Another one has lost a family. Me? I've been at Julia's home for Orphans since I can remember. My name is Eileen Sheridan. My mom died in childbirth 12 years ago and my dad disappeared even before that. I don't think about them much... Oh who am I kidding? Of course I think of my parents! Who wouldn't as an orphan? I advise you to never take anything for granted. Too bad I have nothing to take for granted. My family is gone.
I suddenly feel a tickle move down my leg and see that in my reverie I dropped the string. I look around and see that everyone has left the room and its eerily silent until Maya giggles and I force a half-hearted smile in her direction. Maya is 2 years younger than me and like a sister to me. Something seems wrong. I reach down to pick up the string but a hand beats me to it. "Here let me get that." I hear as the hand reaches down for the string. I snatch it back and snap, "who are you?" I finally look up at the face and gasp. Black hair masks most of his pale skinned face but through masses of messy strands I can make out dark coal-like eyes. A shadow passes over his face and I want to scream. He looks normal for the most part, a little skinny, and scary but what mostly surprises me is I've seen him before. In dreams. "You!" I point accusingly at him. And fear crosses his features. It passes so fast though I feel as if I've imagined it. "My name is Miles Montgomery."
"No it's not. Miles is coming tomorrow afternoon. You... you are not Miles. I know you! I've seen you!" I scream wildly. In the window across the room I can vaguely make out my reflection, but its not mine. Instead of my usual blue eyes a range of colors pass through my irises. And my light brown hair is an unusual shade of red. Maya suddenly grabs my arms and holds me back from tearing this boy's eyes out. I scratch at her to let me go. I must look like a wild animal but I don't care. His aura. His scent. His face. Everything about him rattles me. Suddenly I stop fighting it. Everything goes still. Maya hesitantly let's me go. It feels like hours before I whisper hoarsely, "Nico. You're name is Nico Di Angelo. You have to help me!" Everything seems to freeze in time. The room starts spinning and I feel sick. Nico's eyes change to a deathly black and his skin pales immensely. I didn't think it was possible to look more ghostly. Shadows spin around us as if the dark is swallowing us whole. All I choke out is, "Help Me!" before it all goes black.
