Vol.2 / Chapter 5 : "The Picture"

"Ahh, Mrs.Lockryder. A pleasure to meet you in your own home." Xavier spoke, nearly taunting her.

"We're not married yet. Only engaged. If you wanted an invite to the ceremony, you could have mailed us a letter." Cinder joked lightly. Why was she joking in such a tense situation? In Xavier's hands, he carried Emilia. She nervously glanced from her daughter to the mercenary.

"Do not fret. I will not harm her. If you do as I say." Xavier then moved his right hand down Emilia's sleeping face, caressing the small girl's cheek.

"So... Fragile. And to think, an assassin's daughter could be so beautiful at such a young age. It's fascinating, really."

"What do you want?" Cinder hissed at him.

"Tomorrow me and Chronos will exchange families. He will hand me my family and the money I've held him for random, to which I'll hand over his family. He has recruited Flint to help him rescue his family before the deal." Xavier explained.

"And?" Cinder still wasn't understanding what he was getting at.

"I want you to keep him away from the deal. At all costs." Xavier then gently placed Emilia down on the velvet couch. He swiftly walked past Cinder as she dashed to her child.

"Or else you and your daughter will die." Xavier walked out of the house, closing the front door behind him.

It was only two seconds before Cinder heard the sound of Flint firing an arrow, followed by the arrow being blocked by Xavier's sword. She quickly opened the front door to reveal Flint and Xavier glaring at each other, seeing who would make the first move.

"Flint!?" Cinder exclaimed. Wasn't he still sleeping upstairs?

"I built the damn house. I think I'd know when there's a rat inside." Flint stated boldly.

"So you haven't looked at your wife yet?" Xavier jeered. Flint had had enough of his talk, suddenly rushing forward and trading his bow for his sword. Flint and Xavier quickly clashed blades, the sound created from metal hitting metal suddenly waking Emilia. Cinder quickly closed the door, then went to hush the child. Luckily, she could still see the battle from the living room window.

Flint spun around, doing a complete 360 and slashing at Xavier twice in the process. Xavier easily blocked both slashes. Flint jumped away, holding his sword between him and Xavier.

"It took me a while," Fount started. As he talked, he pulled the picture that Xavier had given days before.

"To remember who this is." Flint said as he showed Xavier the picture.

"The girl in this picture isn't your wife. It's Velvet Ashwood, my old teammate. The younger girl shown is her sister, Violet Ashwood." Xavier's eyes widened in surprise.

"You know of them?" He asked, almost accusingly.

"Velvet died on a mission, two years ago. Violet is currently being taken cared for by a relative. But we're getting past the point here. You lied to me about this picture, which means that you were just trying to make sure I didn't go to the exchange. But why? Why would you, Xavier Underfall, the most successful mercenary need to be scared of me? The only answer is that you were scared of me learning the truth. Something Chronos knows and isn't telling me." Xavier smiled upon hearing Flint's words.

"You are as talented as they say, Flint Lockryder. However, it is getting late. I think I shall take my leave." Xavier said before retreating to the forest.

"Then leave." Flint responded, sheathing his sword. Xavier nodded, then took his leave.

Once he was inside his home, Cinder quickly fired questions at him.

"Why'd you let him leave?"

"He had twenty or so men in the forest waiting should he need assistance. They were following you when you went to my mother's grave." Cinder gulped loudly, suddenly scared.

"You saw me go?"

"I saw. I didn't listen to what you said. If it was something private, then you'll tell me later."

"Flint.... How about I tell you now?"

"Hm?"

"You have to kill me. Now, Flint."
