I awoke to the earliest rays of light and the sounds of the birds singing, and I groan. It's to damn early I think to myself as I push the blankets off  and check my phone. It's 7 in the morning and school starts in 45 minutes. I sigh and walk to my closet and pick out a cute pair of blue jean shorts and a gray crop top that sits just above my belly button.

Then I walk to my bathroom, where I straighten my hair and quickly put some makeup on. I don't cover my face in makeup today, I only have time to do the basic eyeliner and mascara, with a little bit of blush. I also throw on my light pink lip gloss, and then I go back in my room, grab my bag and phone, and hurry downstairs.

"Mornin' mama" I say as I see her in the kitchen. I catch a glimpse of the clock and it reads 7:30.

"Good morning honey, I didn't realize you were still home. Can I make you something to eat?" She says and she flashes me a smile.

"No thanks" I say as I grab an apple, "I'm late anyways. I'll see you later, love you"

"Okay Honey love you too, drive safe" she says.

"I will" I manage to say before closing the door in a hurry. I rummage through my bag, searching for my keys and I find them just as I get to my car door. I get in, throw my bag in the passenger seat, and quickly drive off.

It's about a 20 minute drive from my house to the school, and it starts in 15 but I don't really care. It's not like I want to be there anyways. A few minutes late never hurt anyone, right?

I'm not one of those girls who cares about everything. In fact, I don't really care about much at all. I've got everything I need, a boyfriend, a best friend, a family, and a life where I can do whatever I want. I guess I like the freedom, I'm 18 so it's not like my parents can stop me from going to parties, hanging out with friends, drinking, etc.

I snap out of my thoughts when I receive a text from my friend, Kristen.

"Heyy can you pick me up haha, I'm running a little late and I don't feel like walking."

Her house is like a few blocks from the school, but if she's leaving now and walking, she won't get there until after 8. I decided to pick her up, because she's my best friend and I wouldn't ditch her like that.

"Sure be there in 10" I reply.

Kristen and I have been friends for as long as I can remember. We've always had each other's backs. Sure, we've had our fights but that doesn't matter. What matters is at the end of the day, she's always by my side. She's always stuck by me, even through hard times. We made it through high school together, and now it's May of senior year, which means we will graduate soon.

I pull into her driveway and honk the horn. She comes running outside, her bag in one hand and her drink in the other. We are already late, the clock reads 7:50. I drive at a casual pace and she talks about her prom dress which she got last night. Prom isn't for another couple weeks, but she's the type of person that always wants to be prepared. After a few minutes we pull into the school parking lot, get out and make our way through the parking lot and to the front doors.

The parking lot was oddly quiet, but I guess that's usual when you are 15 minutes late.

We walk up the steps to the main doors and push the button to get in, and once we are inside we are hurried to the attendance office by a teacher.

"What's going on?" I asked as soon as we reached the attendance office. "I didn't realize being 15 minutes late meant getting in trouble"

"You're not in trouble dear, we are on lockdown through, there are rumors that a man threatened to shoot up the school today" the lady behind the desk said. My jaw dropped and I looked at Kristen. That couldn't possibly happen, not here. That kind of stuff just doesn't happen in Homer New York.
