Author's Note: Hey guys! :) This story of mine is the very first story I have EVER written in my entire life. I actually wrote this WAY before I fell in love with writing. I actually posted this on YouTube before, but since my account is almost practically rotting by now, I took it down a long time ago. I re-posted it in my LJ account and made it into fanfiction, and I decided to post it here as well but then as orginal fiction again. :) I really hope you like it. Since this was my very first, I feel like it has many flaws in it since my writing style now is very different from how I wrote this before and I was just too lazy to do it all over again, but at least I tried my very best. I hope you like it! Oh and try listening to it with music. It tends to get more emotional when you read it while playing the instrumental version of the song 'Right Here Waiting' by Richard Marx or maybe Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On"(Instrumental). xD Comments are greatly appreciated.
Reminisce
So it’s his birthday today, huh?
I laughed bitterly, my vision starting to get blurry.
Today was September 12, 2014, and 49 straight consecutive years had already passed since I last gave him a surprise gift or even just a small hug and kiss on the lips.
I rocked back and forth on my rocking chair, my eyes scanning the well-furnished room to look for something that could possibly stop the growing sadness inside me.
My eyes caught sight of the dresser near my bed. It was relatively small, its color ranging from dark brown to pitch black. It has 2 drawers on its front, the gold linings at its edges seeming like it was urging me to come closer.
It was a gift from my daughter on my 69th birthday 5 years ago, and I'd never put anything in it if that specific thing wasn't of great importance to me. There's only one thing occupying its inner space, and it made my breathing harder just by the thought of it.
I stood up from my seat, my wobbly legs walking towards the dresser. I opened the top compartment, and I just... stared.
A small black velvet box was neatly placed in the middle of the empty drawer, and my hand trembled as I picked it up.
I gracefully slumped back to my chair, leaning against it for extra comfort. Short snippets of memories entered my mind as my finger's trailed the box's cottony texture. As soon as I got the ring out, I rolled the silver band between my palms, and a sob escaped from my throat. My eyes squeezed shut as I readied for the tears.
Knock Knock.
My heart skipped a beat at the sound, and I quickly wiped away the forming tears in my eyes. I took a huge lungful of breath before shouting at the door. "Come in."
The door opened and there came out a very pretty, black- haired girl.
My daughter, Jessica.
"Hey Mom." She said, walking up to me with a smile on her face. She planted a small kiss on my cheek and bent her knees to look at me straight in the eye.
"Ethan and I are going to have lunch together at The Plaza. Do you want to come with us? It's going to be fun." She cheerfully suggested, clearly emphasizing the word 'fun' in a sing song voice. I saw her eyes travel down to my hands and I gulped. She sighed.
"It's Dad again, isn't it?" She asked. She moved closer to my chair and gently sat down on my lap.
It felt like the time when she was just 5 years old. Jessica was sitting on top of my thighs, crying her eyes out because she burned her finger while touching the stove. I already told her many times to stay away from it, but she just wouldn't listen. It was almost the same as before.
