CHAPTER 12

River bent down into a squatting position and began to slowly treat my wound. I felt the urge to ask him about what he was hiding but I knew I shouldn't.

After a short moment, River stood up again and spoke, "Done," a voice I couldn't ever forget, I hated it, glassy, hollow and lifeless.

"Thanks," despite saying that, my words came out insincere and unhappy. River looked at me, and then stared without focusing into the distance. I stood up and joined him, that was when something caught my eyes, a small pale blue crystallized symbol, the enemy's crest, it camouflaged into the whiteness almost perfectly but something like that would never be missed my eyes. I nudged River which seemed more like a punch, I pointed at the crest as River realized what I was pointing at.

"If we break that, we can get out, but this has to be done in the direct sunlight which is noon...but it's already getting dark." He was right, the sun slowly fell under the horizon line as the moon glowed in the sky.

"You sure know a lot, but now we're gonna have to wait till tomorrow," River nodded. "I just still understand though, if these slayers are trying to hunt magic users down, why are they magic users as well?" I sat down beside a tree as River did too next to me.

"Because...what they use isn't magic..." he said after a pause.

"Then what is it?!" my words burst out in a shout as I spun around and glared at him, my eyes were stern and sharp, suspicion rose up in me. "And how do YOU know that?"

"No reason, I just do and this power is not like yours or everyone else's, your abilities are natural, these people's are not, they get this power through sacrificing something more important or that is practically their life and..." his face paled slightly. I frowned.

"And...what?" I felt I was forcing him to tell what he didn't want to but I couldn't help my urge to know.

"And... I'm sorry Winter but I can't tell you anymore than that," he was now really reluctant to say another word. I sighed and then looked back away, I clenched my fist, hard, my knuckles turned white because of how hard I was pressing.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The morning sun rose above into the sky again, I rubbed my eyes and blinked a few times to clear my vision. Yesterday night's conversation replayed in my mind. Next to me, River stared off again. We now just had to wait until noon. I walked nearer to the crest, that was when I noticed a shiny barrier around the area of the crest, I touched the barrier with my finger tips but then I immediately pulled my finger away, my finger tingled with pain.

A gold glow gathered around my fist as I turned slightly and punched the barrier, I winced at the pain but it was worth it, the barrier shattered and broke away. I walked to the crest and studied it carefully.

"By the way, we can't destroy that with magic," River's voice seemed so distant yet so close. I nodded without looking at him. If we couldn't use magic, that meant we couldn't use our sword either.

I stared up at the sun, the light pierced my eyes sharply as I quickly looked back down, it was almost noon.

We stood waiting, soon, quicker than I thought, noon came. I opened my hand and settled my palm on to it, the pain was worse than any pain I had felt before but I had to do this. I wrapped my fingers around, squeezing the crest as hard as I could until it would finally break, and bit my lips and squeezed my eye shut, still the pain was unbearable.

After a few tight crushes, the crest shattered, I slowly let my hand fall into a dangle, I turned my hand around so that I could see the palm, blood seeped out through large cuts, blood drops fell to the ground. River tore of a piece of clothing and wrapped t around my hand. I smiled as he finally smiled back.

Suddenly a ray of bright whiteness covered my vision, I held up my hand to shield my eyes from the brightness, then the light died down once again and revealed the real world. We appeared at the place where all of our groups split up, a plain grass hill.I exhaled but then River pointed at something that probably didn't seem at all good.

A bomb explosion set off in the distance followed by a girl's cry.

"ZYLEN!" Alice's voice echoed through the air. The cry probably meant one thing and only one thing, Zylen was dead. Nothing could be done any more.
