"BlackStar?"

"What! No!"

"Death The Kid?"

"Nope."

"Blair?"

"I told you, this time it's a boy," You said with a giggle.

The boy sitting next to you chuckles with a sarcastic grin on his face. Noticing this, you could feel a smile stretching on your face.

"Stein?"

"Eww, Soul that's so not cool!" Nose wrinkling, you grabbed a pillow to your left and threw it at Soul's face. He let out an offended scoff and dramatically flops onto the floor. Barking out a laugh, you scooted on over and stopped next to him, leaning over to see his face. "Yo, are you dead or something?" You lightly smacked his chest with a giggle, watching as he tried to hide a smile.

"I'm not sure," he hummed, "maybe you'll need to check." His smile had grown a bit and you gave in with a huff.

"Fine," you drawled, your voice dripping with sarcasm, "I'll humor you." You lean down and place your ear on his chest.

'Ba-Bum, Ba-Bum, Ba-Bum'

"Yup, sounds like you're alive to me Soul," you let out with a small laugh, a bit embarrassed that this was happening. You moved to get back up only to find that you couldn't. Confused, you tried again, realizing that the boy's arms were wrapped around your back. "Uh, hey. What are you doing?" But you didn't really get to finish that sentence because Soul slid you forward until his face was right below yours. He was close. So close that it made heat crawl up your neck in embarrassment.

"Is it me?" He softly asked. You stayed in stunned silence, staring into his crimson eyes, trying to figure out a response. Was he playing around? Did he mean it?

Unbeknownst to you, the lightness in the boy's eyes dimmed a bit seeing your prolonged hesitation and he began to regret asking. "Hey, I was jus-"

He was cut off when the door slammed open. Both of your eyes widened and your heads snapped to the door in shock of the sound. Cheeks flushed in embarrassment.

Maka stood at the door, books stacked in her arms with her chin propped on top to keep the stack balanced. She turned sideways to kick the door closed. "Hey, I'm back! I've got all the books we need to study with," she said. It was then that she noticed the both of you. You scrambled away from the boy, face even redder now, too embarrassed to speak. Soul wasn't any better off, and cleared his throat, trying to push a 'cool' expression onto his face (it didn't work as well as he thought it would).

"I uh- so," Maka struggled for words, her face flushed too, "I apologize for my timing?" Soul's face had regained its neutral colour and he stared at her with his shark toothed grin.

"Ah, no worries, nothing was happening," he assures the flustered girl, getting up to help his meister with her books. Her pulling back, bringing light to her notorious stubborn nature. His action had hurt you a bit more than you'd like to admit. It wasn't the first time either.

You had liked the boy for a while, but you noticed he had seemed a bit withdrawn as time went by. He was a laid back person with a strong will, and knowing this made you question whether or not he actually felt similar feelings toward you or if you were being foolish. You had seen the way he recently started acting towards Maka pretty recently. While you were glad that he was finally trying to be nicer to the girl instead of making fun of her all the time, he had been pushing you further away. You could never dislike either of them, they were actually one of the only reasons you were staying in Death City.

You loved your friends, but you had gotten an offer from an institution in your meister's country after the both of you had made a name for yourselves. It was a very nice place and still new and growing. On top of that, your meister Shira is out visiting her family for the seasonal break. She had confessed that she had been considering moving back now that there was a new institution, but was conflicted because she also loved it here in Death City. Shira made sure to let you know that, as much as she loved you, it wasn't you stopping her from living out these thoughts. She also made it a point to say that she doesn't expect you to follow her if she goes, as your waves for soul bonding are pretty adaptable and she's sure you'd be fine.

Now you were really considering it.

When you had gotten home after the study session with your two friends, you whipped out a piece of paper, a pen, an envelope, and a stamp. Shira would be up there for a while longer, so you decided to write to her.

In your letter, you told her that you wanted to go up and see her and maybe see about touring the institution together. She already knew about your situation with Soul, so you filled her in on the recent details and why you finally decided to make the trip up. Of course, the letter wasn't just the sappy story, you included a ton of love towards your friend and lamenting how awful it was without her because you knew she would smile.

You sealed the letter and walked outside to pop it in your mailbox. When you came back in, you looked around your shared apartment with conflict in your eyes. Putting off rising feelings about the decision, you got ready for bed.

It had been a few days shy of a week when you received a letter back from Shira.

During this week, you had taken up smaller missions on your own, mostly to keep yourself occupied. You knew deeper down that you were also doing this to have the minimal interactions with Soul and Maka, and you could feel the guilt pool in your stomach.

You ripped open Shira's letter, biting your lip in anxiety and excitement. You smiled when you saw her familiar handwriting.

Shira had agreed and said she thought it was a great idea. She mentioned how she and her family would love it if you stayed with them a while and sent you back some of her love, making you feel giddy. Since the break was ending in a few days, she said if you didn't come up it would be perfectly fine and you could always go together at a later date when there is more time. She ended with some light teasing about your thing with Soul, causing heat to rush to your cheeks, and told you not to send a letter back because she would be gone by the time it got there. "Surprise me," she had signed.

You nodded to yourself, the anxiety you felt being replaced with a thrilling feeling. You were excited to be able to go on this little adventure to see Shira, her country, and her family.

In an instant your bags were packed with a burst of courage and inspiration, and you reached your hand out to your front door handle. That's when the guilt started creeping back in. You froze. Suddenly feeling bad for leaving without notice, especially after avoiding your friends.

Leaving your bag by the door you walked back into the kitchen and placed your arms on the counter with a hanging head.

'Should I leave like this?' You questioned with a frown.

Sparked with an idea, you wrote a note explaining how and why you were leaving, that you were fine and not to worry. Soul and Maka had spare keys to yours and Shira's apartment and vice versa after an embarrassing lock out incident. You were grateful to them, having spared you from a visit this past week but you knew it was a matter of time before they cornered you for questioning.

You left the note on the counter and double checked that you had everything and walked to the door. The excitement flooded back into you as you wore a smile stepping out the front door, making sure to lock it. Then you were off to the station.

Only, you had forgotten to write that you'd be back.
