Chapter 17
"Hi, sorry I'm late." I quickly say when I get inside, expecting my parents to be mad at me.
"That's okay. I hope meatloaf is okay." My mom answers from the kitchen.
I apprehensively enter the kitchen when she doesn't scold me.
"What did you and Harry do?" She asks and puts together a plate for me.
"We just hung out at his grandma's cabin.. Nothing really." I shrug.
"Mom, where's dad?" I ask and sit down.
"I don't know, do you want water? Milk?"
"I'm good..." Why is she acting so weird? Shit, does she know that Harry slept over last night somehow and she's just waiting for my dad to come home to yell at me?
"So do you like Harry?"
Fuck. She knows.
"Yeah, he's a good friend." I can feel the heat stir in my cheeks as I play around with the meatloaf on my plate.
"That's good, you seem to be making some new friends." She says.
"Yeah, I guess it's not so bad here."
I'm waiting for the blow; but it never comes. Dinner proceeds with little conversation, my mom only talking about my school or my new friends.
"Thanks for dinner." I get up from the table and clear my plate.
I go straight up to my room before she can stop me, I don't want to risk being yelled at tonight. I don't understand why she was acting so weird, if she knew about Harry staying over then why wouldn't she just yell at me and get it over with?
I feel exhausted from not only my day with Harry, but the endless stream of thoughts running through my head. I obviously like Harry, I can't deny that, but I know he's bad for me. Yeah, he makes me feel good when it's just us, but that's not enough. He has to stay consistent with his feeling towards me, none of this mood swing crap.
I wake up and immediately feel the effects of a Sunday. I really don't want to go back to schooltomorrow, this weekend has been one of the best since I moved here despite the rocky start on Friday. However, I'm looking forward to getting some homework and studying done today, and just relax.
"Hey dad, nice to actually see you today." I laugh when I come downstairs to see him sitting on the couch.
"Hey kiddo." He responds.
"Where were you yesterday?" I ask and sit on the chair across from him. I mean I'm sure he wasn't at the hardware store all day.
"Addie, we need to talk." He says and finally looks at me.
Oh great, here comes the blow. My mom probably told him and he's going to yell at me for letting Harry stay here...
"About what?" I ask slowly.
"Look, I know it's been hard for you to move somewhere new, and I really appreciate you not complaining and just going with it."
"Okay..."
"Addie, you're mom is moving out." He says.
"What? Why?" I breath, I definitely did not see this coming.
"I know it's difficult to understand, but with the stress of moving, your mom and I have been fighting a lot. We just think it's the best, so we're not affecting you."
"So you two are going to get a divorce just because you're a little stressed out? Is she going to move back home?" I snap.
"No, we have just decided to separate, and take it day bay day. And she already has an apartment by to the hospital, so she'll be close."
