Prologue: The Beginning

Cold breeze blew, sending shivers down my spine. I grunted, turned my body to the side, only to find out that it made me colder than before. Now, even my cheeks became victims to the wet and cold moisture. It's almost as if I had lied down on snow.

Snow...?

I sat up with a start, my eyes wide open as I stared at my new surroundings. It took me a few good seconds to actually register the situation.

I turned my head around to further inspect the place I was at while still sitting down. The biting cold didn't seem to get through my head at the moment as I was lost at what to do. Trees. Everywhere I looked were trees. Pines covered in layers of snow, ground covered in snow, and the snow-colored sky. Snowflakes seemed to fall endlessly without any signs of stopping.

When I realized that, I finally felt the bone-chilling cold coursing through my body, and straight into my veins. I stood hurriedly, brushing off the remaining snow stuck on my clothes, hoping that it would serve me better. Although I did that, I understood that it did nothing to decrease the absolute zero temperature of this place.

Where am I? Why am I here? How did I get here? When did I get here? How long have I been unconscious? And... who am I?

A flood of questions threatened to burst my head off. I had no recollections of anything to answer the inquiries that I had. No memories seemed to surface, even from the depths of my mind. I was left with nothing except some knowledge I didn't remember learning.

Like, how did I know that the white stuff on the ground was snow? What defined white anyways? I didn't understand, but I just knew. Even the words that came out of my head as I pondered was a mystery. I wrapped my hands around my body; I felt as if I was going to go crazy. I didn't even know my own identity.

"This is just... insane." I muttered under my cold breath, speaking to nobody in particular.

I knew that drowning myself in those questions wouldn't do any good and no matter how long I think, I was confident that I wouldn't be able to find the answers to them. I needed to take the initiative. The first move to survive in this chilling climate, and in this place that fit the bill to be called a forest from the knowledge that I had.

First of all, the only clothes that I wore was a white buttoned shirt and a pair of black trousers. I determined that these were definitely not enough to block the cold from my body. However, I doubted that I would be able to easily and luckily find some piece of clothing that would actually do something against the damnable weather.

To make matters worse, I absolutely had nothing on me. No food, no water. That also meant less chance of surviving. Standing still wasn't going to help; I moved my feet to explore and forage the forest for food, even if the chance of finding any was slim.

I tried to keep my footsteps as quiet as possible, not daring to make a noise that might attract unwanted attention. Knowing all of these information just felt so foreign and yet, very natural at the same time.

I constantly looked and searched the ground for eatable plants. From my knowledge, there were still a lot of eatable plants that grew in winter. I had to stay optimistic, but the growling that came from my stomach was not encouraging in the slightest bit. Due to the very low surrounding temperature, my energy depleted at a rather fast rate. I estimated that I had only walked for thirty minutes.

I had almost given up when I finally caught something at the corner of my eye. Little white fluffy-looking ears were twitching, its ruby-like eyes scrutinized my every movement. Obviously, it was wary of me at first but then, I could feel that the thing's tensed body finally relaxed, an aloof expression evident on its face.

What in the world is that?

Although I saw it from afar, I could guess that its height easily surpassed a human's normal height. Probably at around 3 meters tall, it stood with a smug look on its face. Sharp fangs came into view when it opened its mouth, possessing eight claws as sharp; they looked like they could tear apart steel with ease.

It should had been identified as a rabbit at first glance, but with all of those dangerous features, I could safely confirm that it definitely was not categorized in the peace-loving, herbivorous animals.

Run.

My brain warned me to get away from the spot right this instance, however, my legs were glued to the ground, as if frozen solid.

The rabbit look-alike began moving, slowly, one step at a time. It's clear that it was not in a rush whatsoever. Its eyes revealed a playful glint when it was only a few dozen meters away from me. It didn't look at me as a prey, that, I fully understood. I was only a small fry, only qualified as a plaything.

My heart thumped even faster; it seemed like it was the only sound I could hear at the moment. Even though it was not hot at all, sweat accumulated on my back, sticking the shirt on my wet skin. I wanted to push my legs to the limits, to escape the predicament, but they just wouldn't budge.

Is this fear?

I had no memories of feeling any kind of emotion, but I knew I was right. If anybody told me otherwise, I wouldn't believe them even if they spent a million years trying to convince me. This, was absolute fear.

The creature that could only be called as a monster kicked the ground with its hind legs, allowing it to burst forward with tremendous speed. All of my thinking halted as my body just froze without even moving a single muscle. My heartbeat also seemed to stop for a moment.

Completely enveloped by fear, I closed my eyes reflexively as the monster stretched its sharp claws, aiming to rip my head off from my shoulders.

My entire head blanked out and it's as if I was shut out of the entire world. While waiting for my death to come right after I had just woken up to this world seemed like an eternity.

Not even a single sound could be heard, not even my breathing nor the monster's movements. When I finally snapped out of my trance-like state and opened my eyes, all that I saw was a bloody mess. Scattered remains of intestines and juices that came from the brain; even some other unrecognizable mashed up body parts dirtied the pure white snow on the ground.

After staring at the crushed pile of meat for a while did I finally realized that the mangled mess that couldn't even be labeled as a corpse, actually belonged to the rabbit-like monster.

I looked around in my vicinity, however, I didn't find any living creature or anything else that could have killed the monster. Then, I checked my own condition.

Small chunks of bloody and mushy meat stuck on my being. My once clean clothes were dyed red and the thick scent of blood wafted in the air.

I only stared at my hands in horror as my stomach churned.

I feel sick...

At that moment, I vomited the liquids and juices that my empty stomach contained.
