Moving Day

There he was.

Running towards me.

He wouldn't stop or slow down.

"AH!" I screamed as he knocked me down. "God, dang it. Ethan, get off me!" I yelled at him.

"Alright, fine." He said as he lifted himself up. "Here." He stuck out his hand to pull me up from the cold grass.

I may have you thinking, 'Already? A boy in the story. He must have the eye of the girl.'

Absolutely not! Ethan Hayes has been my best friend since freshman year. We both go to UCLA now for our first year, and it's moving day for both of us. I've known him for 5 years and there's no way I could find any emotional and love connection between us.

"I'm so glad I found you, Greyson. I've been looking everywhere for you. Where's your dad?" He asked me.

"He's at my truck getting more stuff. I was about to go to my dorm and meet my roommate. Who's yours?" I asked him.

"His name is Skyler, he got a scholarship from playing football! I thought it was pretty frickin' cool." He informed me.

"That's cool. You can go find my dad by the library parking lot, if you want to see him and maybe help me with my stuff." I told him.

"I'll be able to spot your truck." He laughed.

He ran off behind me and I started walking towards my building. My roommate should be there already, seeing as my dad and I came really late.

If you're wondering where my mother is, I don't have one. I have 2 dads and I was adopted. I have been hated on for it and so have they, but they made it through. My other dad, Papa, isn't here because he had a meeting back in Chicago with his CEO. He wished me the best of luck on my first day of college on Monday.

I'm super grateful for them, they helped me get this academic scholarship for UCLA. I had a 4.0 GPA through all of high school and they disciplined me to always study and get ahead of my work. I never had time for friends but I only know Ethan because he lived next door and he was able to talk to me through a window like the Taylor Swift music video.

I got to my building and went to my room. I unlocked the door to see my roommate on her desktop.

"Hi, you must be my roommate." I said as I stuck out my hand.

She had wavy, gray hair that actually looked good on her. She had big eyes that were a beautiful, dark blue. She was very tan, as well.

"Hey, and you must be Gary?" She said obnoxiously.

"No, it's Greyson or Grey. You were close, though." I laughed.

"I'm Genevieve Wattson, call me Genny. I like your style, you know how to turn an almost-insult into a thing to laugh about. Good to meet ya'." She shook my hand.

"I like you, too. Nice to meet you, too, Genny." I grinned, "I love your side of the room, are you all mov-" I was interrupted by the door opening to see Ethan and my dad.

"Jeez, Grey. What the heck did you put in those boxes? Rocks?" Ethan breathed out as he set the box down.

I opened the box to show my large rock that was actually a container.

"How did I know?" He said sarcastically.

I looked to my side to see Genny beside me.

"Oh! Dad, Ethan, this is Genevieve, call her Genny." I said perkily.

"Hi there, Mr. Grey's Father." She shook his hand.

"It's Gerald." He smiled.

She turned to look at Ethan with a little gleam in her eye, "And you," She looked up and down at him,"must be Ethan, Grey's... Boyfriend?"

"Um, no, I'm single." He shook her hand.

"Hopefully, we can... all get together sometime." She said slyly.

Something sparked in me that day. I had no idea what it was until I was there for a few weeks.

We were out of the building and I was with Ethan and my dad.

"Genny seems nice." My dad said.

"Yeah, she seems to like me." I said.

I looked at Ethan in the eyes waiting for an opinion on Genny.

"Oh, uh. She seems... great." He said nervously.

"You okay there?" I said.

"Y-yeah." He stuttered.

"Well, I'll see you through videochat, dad." My eyes became glossy.

"Greyson, what's wrong?" Ethan said.

"It's just... it's going to be so much more harder than high school and I didn't want to leave Chicago." A stray tear fell from my cheek.

Ethan pulled me into his strong arms and hugged me tight. "This is coming from to girl who always had straight A's, won all the spelling bees, and had no worries for finals." He pushed me away from him but he still was holding my arms. "You'll be fine, and remember, I'll be in that building right over there, whenever you need me." He smiled at me as I did to him.

"And Grey," my dad said, "never worry about anything. What goes, goes."

"Thank you, guys. So much." I said.

My dad hugged me one last time and went off to his car.

"Want to go grab dinner? We can invite our roommates." Ethan said.

"Food sounds perfect right now. We should go to that pizza place by that McDonald's I saw." We went on from there.

Going to college made me realize what I was going to turn out to be. The classes I took were all wrong. The thoughts that went though my head that day... didn't even matter the next day.
