Evercrest High School was just letting out for their first lunch hour as a midsize silver SUV pulled up to its foreboding iron gates. Camille DuMont calmly pressed the small yellow button that would let the office know she was there, not that the corner cameras didn't already tell them that. One might have expected the gates to make a loud screeching sound when opened, but the gates soundlessly separated as Camille DuMont continued her drive up the long winding path that would take her to see her children.

Hayden and Damon DuMont were walking out of the lunch area to meet their friends when they saw a familiar silver SUV pulling up in front of their school. Camille DuMont gracefully stepped out of her vehicle and began making her way toward her children. She was a tall woman with naturally tan skin and long black hair that shined in the beaming sun even though it was tied up into a knot on the top of her head. This particular hair style prominently displayed Camille's high cheekbones and bright green eyes. Hayden shared all of these features with her mother with the exception of her bright blonde hair that came from her father. Damon on the other hand acquired all of his looks from his mother including his high cheek bones and black hair.

Camille's long strides made her seemingly long walk very short. Hayden and Damon were still exchanging looks of confusion when their mother arrived in front of them. She never came to school unless it was an emergency or one of them had forgotten something at home. She was not involved in the PTA or any other school functions for that matter. Mr. and Mrs. DuMont were very private and did not like to be out in public unless they were at work or seeing friends. They encouraged the same from their children which led to them participating in few limited after school activities and certainly nothing that brought a lot of attention to them or their family.

Hayden could feel the other students watching them as her mother stood in front of them. The nearly silent whispers echoed in Hayden's hears. Hayden's voice was low when she addressed her mother, "Mom, what are you doing here?" the quickness of her words made it clear that she was very uncomfortable with everyone starring. Damon looked more curious than embarrassed or annoyed, but he had never been one to care what other people thought of him or his family. Camille ignored her daughter's tone and simply began to speak.

"I am taking you two out of school early today. I have already phoned the school and talked with your principal. Since it is so close to summer vacation and you both have such high grades, she had no problems with me pulling you out of school a week early. I explained to her that your grandmother has fallen very ill and your father wants to see if there is anything that he can do for her." Damon and Hayden both had blank expressions on their faces.

Hayden was the first to speak, "Since when do we have a grandmother? You and dad have never mentioned any other family and now dad just wants us to drop everything and go help? Don't they have doctors wherever she lives?" Hayden had never been good at controlling her tongue especially when it came to her family for some reason.

"Hayden, your father and I will explain more on the way, but right now I just need you to get in the car please. We have a plane to catch." Hayden let out a sigh of frustration and rolled her eyes. Damon nudged her shoulder and they both adjusted their backpacks and began reluctantly walking to the SUV. Hayden opened the door and slid across so Damon could get in as well. Each tossed their bags into the back and slumped down into their seats.

Camille quickly climbed into the driver's seat and pulled away from the curb and down the long drive to the iron gate. This time the gate opened as Camille approached it. The normally busy road was clear of other cars when Camille turned right out of Evercrest drive. Now she was headed to Saint Haven's Hospital to pick up Jackson DuMont, her husband.
