I stood backstage and watched her perform.
My Mother.
She was talented, I'll give her that.
Did you know I was born when she was sixteen? No? Didn't think so.
The crowd screamed loudly as she started talking.
"Time for some questions! This is a special day for me because its my daughters birthday. Come on out Maya!"
I walked out slowly, some what stunned. The audience was singing happy birthday. My mother had her arm around me. She never showed any affection for me what so ever.
"So, question one; is Vanessa a good mom?"
She looked at me expectantly.
"Yes." I said breathing into the microphone. "She's a great mom."
Lies.
More and more questions where asked until My mom came across a peculiar one.
"Can Maya sing too?"
My mother answered for me before I could prevent the worst.
"Yes."
The crowd started cheering in expectation.
I lift the microphone to my mouth and started singing.
When I finished the crowd didn't make a noise and I was dragged off stage by my mom's manager.
"What did we say about singing in public? Your voice is too weird! Your accent lingers when you sing!"
I looked down at my shoes. They were right. My Scottish accent was still there when I sang.
"I beg to differ. Your voice is raw and unique Maya and I would like to sign you to my label."
I looked up in shock. THE Simon Cowell just offered me a recording contract.
"She'll most certainly not do it!" My mom's nosy manager Alice butted in.
"Actually Mr. Cowell, I would be delighted to sing for you. Can I do a test track in studio?" I said. This is probably the most rebellious thing I've done. Besides dying my hair blonde.
"Alright then Ms. Hudson, 11:30 am at the studio." Simon said agreeing as he walked off. I ignored Alice's complaining and made my way to mom's meet and greet to tell her the news.
I slowly opened the door as to not attract attention. As usual my mom attracted the attention to me.
"Why if it isn't the birthday girl? What's up honey?"
"Not in front of the fans mom." I mumbled so only she could hear me.
"Whatever you can tell them you can tell me Hun."
"Have it your way then." I said bracing myself. "Simon Cowell asked to sign me to his record label."
My mother's face flushed red quickly, a sign of her anger.
"What did you say?"
"That I would do a test recording tomorrow." I said calmly more confident in my act of defiance.
I got mixed reactions from the fans. Some said that my voice was gorgeous and the others were suck ups and said I would never be as good as my mom. After the meet and greet, mom practically dragged me into the limo.
When the door was slammed shut she spoke, not words of praise for her only child, but criticism.
"What were you thinking? You know that no one in the family is allowed to just replace me like that." She hissed, completely angry.
"I haven't even been signed yet, so let's wait to see what they think at the test recording tomorrow." I said trying to tone down her anger.
"Fine, but if they sign you you must move out of the house immediately, never tour near me, don't use your last name on stage and don't get into a tabloid!" She said laying out some "basic" rules.
I was shocked. Move out of the house? But before I could reconsider my impulsive side spoke.
"Deal."
