Ellen POV
"Are you free this weekend?" Portia asks me. A jolt of energy is shot through me and I jump on the inside. "Oh, I, uh, yes, I think so." I'm still surprised about what she just asked me, "Why'd you ask?" "Oh, just wondering if you'd like to come over. Spend the night if you want." Even though I just met Portia a few days ago, there's something about her that's just sticking out to me. Not in a bad way, but in a good way. A great way. "Oh, yeah, that'd be fun- I mean, nice, cool. Something to do." Saying 'fun' just sounded weird. "Alright, is after school on Friday good?" She asks. "Yeah, that's a good time." It's Thursday today, and I'm excited for tomorrow. "Great, then we're set." She says hitting the table with both of her palms. I smile and then go blank face. "Ell-" "Yes? Hm?" I say interrupting her, snapping out of whatever I was in. Snickering, she puts up one finger and moves it in a circle. My eyes follow it and then she snaps. "So I still have you. I didn't lose you in day dream land." "Mhnh. I'm still here." "Okay, good." We sit and talk until it's time to go to our next class.
I walk into the gym towards the locker room, and Portia is right behind me. I get inside and put away my backpack and change and then walk back out. Portia follows me about ten seconds later and we both sit down. We wait for everyone else to come out of the locker rooms, but as we're sitting there Portia gasps. "What happened?" I ask, curious. "Gabby is in this gym hour?" "Uh, oh, yeah, Gabby.." I say with a hissy tone. "What about her?" "She's one of my few friends. She rides my bus, or I ride her bus, and she's in my geography class." "Oh, that's cool." I stare at Gabby and she looks around for a spot. She sees Portia and smiles but then looks at me and narrows her eyes. I smirk, and Gabby slowly walks over to Portia, ignoring me and sits down. "Hey, Gabby!" Portia says cheerfully. "Hi Portia." Gabby replies back sounding unhappy that I'm here. While Gabby and Portia are talking, I peek over Portia's shoulder and look at Gabby, seeing me and turning sideways so she can only see Portia. I get up and walk right in front of Gabby and sit down. She turns back around and I laugh on the inside. The gym teachers come out and blow the whistle. "Sit down!"
Walking out of the locker room exhausted from all the running we had to do today, I see Portia and Gabby both standing by the door and talking to one another. I quickly walk up to both of them. "Oh, hey Ellen." Portia says greeting me. Gabby doesn't say anything. "Hi Portia, hi Gabby." Emphasizing on the G. She just flicks her hand up for a little wave. "What were y'all talking about?" Asking curiously. "Just abou-" Gabby stops Portia by putting a finger up near her face. She whispers something into Portia's ear, I can't make out what it is but I heard the word 'anything' and I see Portia's face going from a smile and then slowly fading away to a worried look. Gabby turns to look at me. "Just about our geography class, why?" I glance at Portia and she quickly shakes her head. "Oh, just.. just wanted to join in on the conversation. I guess I can't because I have no idea what happens in your geography class." "Yeah, what a shame." Gabby says cocking her head and sighing. The bell rings. "Well, gotta go." Gabby says, darting out the gym doors. Portia decides to leave too, but I grab her shoulder and pull her back to where I am and we slowly walk. "What the hell was that about?" I ask, low toned and almost whispering. "I don't know, and why was Gabby so rude to you?" "Gabby was one of my best friends, since third grade. Late last year when I came out as a 'gay faggot', she thought I was trash all of a sudden. Like I betrayed her. She started my new nickname, 'Gayo'. Everyone calls me it." I see Portia's face jolts to scared. "What happened?" "Oh, uh, nothing." She clears her throat. "I-I'm fine." "You sure? You don't look fine." "I'm okay, I swear." "Alright, see you in drama!" I say as I turn down the hall. "See you then!" She shouts back.
