Dear diary,

It’s hard to lose or watch someone slip away from you that you really care about. My grandad has joined heaven now, and every night I fall asleep I know he’s there watching over me. It’s hard growing up without family around you, I miss him loads already. No-one talks about him at home. Sometimes people don’t know what to say to you. There’s moments where you just want to hide away and you go to sleep that night and pretend it’s all a dream. Though the truth is, it isn’t. I wanted to find closure and I wanted the nightmares to stop. So I sang, I started to sing every day. I feel like a whole new person when I sing, someone different, it’s like I can leave all my problems behind.

"Brooke, you’ve got to keep smiling. I’m sure he would be so proud of you." Emily said sympathetically.

"I just wish he was here to see me; I can’t put into words how much I miss him. It’s like a part of me feels incomplete. I guess you’ve got to look forward, going to concentrate on my studies, music and dancing and put everything I’ve got into it." Brooke replied sadly.

Brooke was standing in the hall way and Mario strolled up to her. He gave her support and comfort. It was the first time he made an effort with Brooke since last year when they drifted apart. Brooke stood there awkwardly; knowing deep down her feelings for him still remained. Brooke pushed them aside and hid her feelings away and kept her heart protected. She wasn’t prepared to get hurt anymore.

‘’So how’s things?’’ Mario whispered.

‘’They’re okay.’’ She said quickly.

Brooke struggled to talk about it; she didn’t want the whole world knowing her business. She especially didn’t want Mario’s attention through sympathy. Brooke stood there and remembered the times when he used to hug her and whisper in her ear, to say how much he loved her. She took a deep breath and slowly walked away.

‘’So Brooke, ready to sing your heart out?’’ Mr Taylor enthusiastically said.

‘’Sir, would you mind if we did something slightly different today? I want to sing something that resembles how I’m feeling, something that I can put all my emotions into.’’ She replied.

‘’Course you can, give me the music sheet and I will follow your lead.’’

Brooke started to sing Dance with My Father Again by Luther Vandross. This song meant the world to her. Her teacher saw a side to her he had never seen before. He saw her insecurities, her pain, and he was captivated. He’d never seen a young girl perform her heart out with so much emotion and passion. Brooke was so afraid and lost all of her confidence. She couldn’t sing in front of people because of stage fright.

‘’So the schools talent show is coming up. The winner gets tickets to the next Olympic games.’’ Mr Davies yelled.

Brookes face lit up, she wanted to sing but then reality kicked in that she was too frightened to do so. Her dream was to be in the Olympics, and this opportunity was right in the tip of her fingers. How could she let it go? The talent show was 2 weeks away. Every day she sang, she had vocal training and wasn’t about to give in. She not only wanted to do it for her grandad but for herself. She wanted to conquer her fear, this was it! It was her chance to shine, her chance to prove herself to everyone.

The day had finally come.

‘’Our next act will be Brooke. Let’s welcome her to the stage.’’ Mr Davies said.

Brooke was hesitant. She didn’t know if she could do it. She cautiously worked her way up to the stage. Her heart was pounding.

She sang. She sang with everything she had. Everyone was clapping and cheering. It seemed this was her time, her break. She was so happy; she held her head up high.

‘’and the winner is....... Brooke.’’ Mr Davies happily announced.

This was the first time Brooke had smiled in ages. She was one step closer to her dream. She was convinced that her grandad guided her, and from that day she regained her confidence and found herself again.
