Chapter1

Uncertainty

She stood staring over the edge of the cliff, her toes right at the edge as she was just about to jump. She longed to disappear. But even though no one human in nature was present to bear witness to her untimely demise, she felt a gust of wind raise her just as she was about to plummet into a rocky abyss that stood, it’s mouth gaping open ready to receive the girl. She was stopped just as one of the taller rocks was within a breath’s distance away from her face. Unfortunately, she squirmed in the breeze’s hold and suffered a small cut to the cheek. The girl didn’t notice, but was however mystified by the fact that she was floating in midair, supported by nothing but an invisible force that seemed so feeble that if it were shaken by the wind, it would fail and sent the girl to her death.

Just what seemed like an eternity had passed, she was returned to the top of the monstrous mountain to be met by none other than the boy whom she had met a mere two years ago on this very mountain. She had met him on a hiking trip when she had broken her ankle and he helped get her to the hospital because his parents had lived nearby and were able to quickly transport her down the mountain.

The thing about this boy was that he was a tiny bit eccentric. He walked around in a black cloak that he got off an online auction website. The cloak covered up dark denim jeans that flared out at the

bottom and a black and yellow T-shirt. The boy was lounging on a rock near where the girl had jumped off the cliff and nearly died.

“What are you doing out here this late at night”? The girl said in reference to the fact that it was nearly four in the morning.

“Making sure you got home okay, I saw you leave and I figured you would come here”. He said, rubbing the back of his head indifferently.

“Brandon, you don’t have to do that. I can take myself home, I’m seventeen after all.” The girl said defiantly, pushing some dark hair out of her eyes. Brandon got up off the rock and put his arm around his friend’s shoulders.

“Kami, we should go home together because it’s so late. Come on, I’ll take you to your house”. He said softly in an effort to change the headstrong girl’s mind. Kami stiffened and pulled herself out of Brandon’s grip.

“No Brandon, I can take care of myself. I’m not a little kid anymore. The girl said before stomping off indignantly. Brandon put his arm down and returned his hood to the top of his long silver hair.

“Oh Kami, if you only knew”. He whispered before heading back to his house under the cover of the waning darkness. The next day, Kami ending up getting home around ten the next morning. She climbed through her open bedroom window and crawled tiredly into her unmade bed and put in her headphones, Hard-rock music blasting through the integrated speakers. She found this music soothing and was soon rocked gently to sleep by the powerful beat. The girl awoke to her five-year old stepbrother shaking her shoulders and playing with the black thorny rose necklace that took it’s residence near the split in her collarbones.

“Kam Kam wake up, it’s time for dinner”. Jack said in a nasally voice. His sister moaned and rolled onto her stomach, looked at her alarm clock and jumped out of bed like a ninja. She brushed out her long dark hair and pulled it back into a tight ponytail. Bangs hung in front of one of her eyes.

Instead of going to dinner she went outside to meet Brandon at the beach. This was one of her favorite places. She was staring out at the ocean as it escaped its dry cruel mistress, the shore. The cold water gently caressed her toes. Her tears seemed to blend in perfectly with the pristine blue water. a few small fish swam around her feet to offer her comfort, but to no avail.

“Hey”. The silver haired boy said, coming up behind her and placing a hand on her shoulder gently. Kami turned around but did not make eye contact with Brandon. Instead she ran her hand up her left arm, causing the sleeve of her sweatshirt to roll up and reveal four long, jagged scars down her wrist.

Brandon’s eyes widened and he moved a bit closer to get a better look at the wounds which were scabbed over for the most part however they were deep and they looked severely infected. The young boy took Kami’s arm in his hand and sighed.

“What the hell are these from?” He asked shock and concern clearly evident in his voice as his eyes stared deeply into Kami’s. The girl stared blankly at him before pulling her hand away abruptly and kicking the sand under her feet.

“Their nothing, alright?  Kami said defensively. Brandon took her chin in his hands and pulled her closer to him, rage welling up inside of his untamed heart.

“Nothing? Please, it’s so obvious that you did that for a reason, so what is that reason?” The boy asked sternly.

“They are a release Brandon. I need pain to feel something”. Kami said as she rolled her sleeve back down and fingered her necklace indifferently. Brandon sighed and sat down near the water’s edge, pulling his friend down next to him.

“Come with me, let me at least bandage you up.” He said sweetly as he stared absently at the roaring sea. Kami nodded and got up before the two headed silently to the silver haired boy’s house. Brandon allowed his hand to hover above his friend’s before he grasped her soft hand in his callused but still strong one. Kami looked down and raised an eyebrow before continuing to walk in perfect step with the boy. She couldn’t help but be comforted by the boy holding her hand; before she knew it she was resting her head on his broad shoulders and being supported by his soothing arms.
