Chapter 9
Saturday
8:00a.m.
The most annoying sound in the world, once again, woke me up. My hand flew up and slammed down onto the snooze button, silencing my alarm clock. I rolled over onto my back and winced at the ceiling. 'Oh yeah, I'm moving to Texas today, woo hoo', I thought bitterly. I flung the covers off and sat up slowly. Wait a second here. I looked down and saw I wasn't in my clothes from last night. I had the same underwear on but besides that and sweat pants, nothing else. I scratched my head trying to remember when I had changed.
The door to my room opened and Tobias leaned in, "Oh good you're up, I changed you by the way, thank me later and let's go. Yall's plane leaves at 3:00." He disappeared into the hall.
At least that answered one question. I got out of bed slowly, still tired and walked to the bathroom. I turned on the shower, stripped and when the water was hot enough, got in. It felt so good. I took a deep breath and sighed. This was it, I was leaving the only home I had known and moving to a brand new one, halfway across the country. I was leaving behind my friends, my brother, my sister, the only girl I'll ever love, and the horrible legacy of the worst party ever thrown. At least no one in Texas will know about that stuff. I finished showering, brushed my teeth, you know, the usual morning stuff. I got dressed, white t-shirt under a light blue button up with vertical white stripes and the sleeves rolled up, blue jeans and my grunge trainers. I took a quick look in the bathroom mirror and quickly ran my fingers through my hair and let it fall into place. I got down to the kitchen, which was bare, and wondered about breakfast.
"Here Tommy," my mom called. I whirled around and caught a pop tart she had tossed. "We'll get more food on the way to the airport."
I quickly ate my one pop tart and began helping everyone carry the remaining boxes to the moving truck. The vast majority of our things were already on the way to Texas. The only things that were left were the clothes we had planned to wear today and a few other odds and ends. Pretty soon, the house was empty and we were taking one last look at our now former home. It was 10:27a.m. when we left the house.
We picked up the rest of breakfast at a drive through and ate it on the way. We arrived at the airport at 11:09a.m. and got our bags checked. We went through the usual security checks and all that jazz and by the time we got to our terminal it was 11:59a.m. We still had three hours to kill before our plane was ready. I wondered around for a bit and got a call that Tobias and Rachel were here. I got back to the terminal to see them waiting with my folks and Tobias had a strange smirk on his face.
"Hey you two," I said as I approached.
"Hey Tommy," said Rachel as she gave me hug. I could tell she wanted to say something about the party, but she decided against it.
"Hey bro, I know last night was rough, and you probably think you're gonna leave here all down and out, but..." he reached into his pocket and pulled out a closed fist. He grabbed my hand and had me open my palm. He opened his fist over my palm and out dropped two keys on a key ring.
"What's this?" I asked, completely confused. I noticed my parents glance at each other and smile. Rachel put her head on Tobias' arm and smiled at me.
Tobias was grinning too, "The smaller key is a copy for my apartment, if you ever want to come visit. The other one, well, you know that car lot we always pass on the way to school?"
I felt my eyes widen.
"Well we all put money in, mostly from dad's raise," Tobias glanced at dad for a second, "and that truck you always drool over, well it's yours now."
