I found myself squinting as light streamed into my bedroom through the cracks in my curtains. Rolling over, I groaned in agony of being woken up so early. Moving my hand around blindly on my side table with my face in my pillow, I searched for my phone to check the time.
One thirty pm?! No one deserves to be woken up this early on their first day of summer. No one.
Just as I was about to bury my head in the blankets to block the light so I could go back to sleep, I heard the front door open with a whoosh and then slam shut a few seconds later. I knew what that meant. I sighed at the prospect and was considering going to hide in my closet before my bedroom door burst open as well.
"Michael! Buddy!" Calum threw his arms out wide in grande gesture, accidentally knocking over a picture frame on my dresser as he did so. I head the glass crack as it landed face down. "I'm gonna pay for that," he said, waving it off.
Even though he knew good and well that I was trying to sleep in my burrito of a blanket, Calum plopped down on my bed anyway, making me bounce up and down a little.
"Ugh, what do you want, Calum?" I said, my grumpy voice muffled by the bedding surrounding my face.
"What do you mean what do I want? It's the first day of the summer, mate! Time to get out there," he promptly stood up and ripped open the curtains, burning my retinas. "What's wrong?" Calum asked when I screamed in agony.
"You're in my house uninvited and waking me up when I'm finally free to sleep as long as I want, that's what's fucking wrong, Calum," finally giving in to the fact I wasn't getting back to sleep at this point, I sat up and rubbed my eyes a little bit, running my fingers through my hair.
"Hey, purple suits you," Calum smiled at me cheekily, noting my new hair color as I reared my ugly head from the sheets for the first time that morning. My mum finally allowed me to dye it a cool color, but just for the summer she said.
"Thanks, mate," I replied curtly, still pissed at him. We literally have all summer if he wants to hang out that bad. He could let me sleep one day.
Calum and I live in a subdivision right outside of Sydney called The Courtyard. I don't know why my parents decided to move here with a kid, let alone Calum's family with two. There's literally no one else here except people who rent out fancy vacation homes and retired old people. The neighborhood may look glitz, but it is hella boring.
Of all the houses in this place,- and trust me, there's a lot- it doesn't make sense as to why Calum Hood had to move into the one right next door to mine. Now he thinks he can just come on in any time he wants! My mum just lets him in too, she thinks it's good that I have a friend, according to her, I stay holed up in my room too much.
I mean, it's not my fault that Final Fantasy and FIFA are more entertaining than an annoying Asian boy breathing down my neck and asking what his 'mate' wants to do next.
Excuse me, Kiwi. He gets so butt hurt every time someone gets that wrong.
Getting out of bed and pulling on a Metallica shirt that I found lying on the ground next to my bed, I trudged to the bathroom so brush my teeth and take care of business before Calum and I got out there to 'seize the day!' Dear God.
"I'll be in your kitchen when you're done in there," he shouted at me through the door, before I heard his footsteps retreating down the corridor.
"Yeah, and you'll probably be eating all of my cold pizza that I was gonna have for breakfast too," I mumbled under my breath when I knew he was out of ear shot.
I don't know why I put up with this guy.

"So, got any idea of what ya wanna do?" Calum asked me once we got outside and were chilling on my front porch."No. Don't you?" He can't be serious.
"I was hoping you would think of something..." He said, trailing off, knowing I was gonna be mad that he dragged me out here in the sun with nothing to do when he knew all I wanted was to play video games.
"Pssh, no. You were the one who wanted to come out here in the first place, nut sack. All I wanted to do was sleep!"
"It's not my fault nothing ever happens in this damn neighborhood! I wish we could drive, then we could actually go somewhere," Calum pouted. Little did he know, once I could drive, there would be no 'we.' I was getting far away from Calum and his crazy ideas. I'd go find somewhere else to be by myself since no one would leave me alone over here. To my parents, I'm 'too reclusive' and to Calum I'm his 'mate.' When can I just be Michael? For now though, I'm stuck just being fourteen. Too old to be a kid, but not old enough to be accepted by adults. It sucks. But not as much as sitting idle in this sweltering heat.
"Well maybe we could-" I started to suggest something because I felt kinda bad for blowing up at Calum like that. He may be an annoying weirdo, but he was never anything but kind to me. Unfortunately, he kinda cut me off before I could redeem myself. The little shit.
"What's that?!" Calum pointed to where a pink blur disappeared around the corner. Now that I could be helpful with.
"Oh, her," I said nonchalantly. Calum's not home a lot during the school year since he plays soccer so much so he doesn't know everything. "I'm not really sure. This spring she just started riding her bike around here."
"Every day?" Calum pursued as he walked towards the street corner shed turned down. I was forced to follow behind him if I wanted to keep talking to him, which really I didn't. I sighed internally.
"Pretty much..." I trained off as we both stared off as the girl rode into the sun. She wore her usual pink helmet and today had a matching bright pink shirt. So much pink.
"And you don't know who she is?" Calum asked, still staring at her back as she rode on.
"I already said I don't, don't you pay attention?" I answered, thinking him on the back of the head. "If you don't know what to do, can we please go back inside before I start to lose my nice shade of vampire? I've been working on it all winter," I said, gesturing to my pale arms.
"Fine, fine. I'll kick your ass in FIFA anyway," Calum replied as he turned abruptly in his heel and started jogging back to my house. Seriously? Now he expected me to exercise in order to keep up with him? I don't think so.
Just to annoy Calum, I took my time making my way back to my house. As I walked, I thought about the girl on the bike. She had been showing up since around March or April, when it was still chilly outside. Everyday, passing my window with the same bright pink helmet. I'd never given her much thought until Calum made issue.
Even now, I didn't know if I should. She's just some random girl riding her bike. What would she want to do with some random freak like me?
