Rose's POV

It was the biggest storm the residents of Koud Island had ever seen in nearly 20 years. The snow had fallen nonstop for weeks while the wind was strong enough to uproot trees and blow them a good distance from their rooted positions.

I sat comfortable, wrapped in a think purple blanket, inside my suspended chair next to my bed. Which is where a very tall, very injured man had been laying unconscious for the past few days. I peaked up from my book every so often, making sure he was still breathing. My glasses kept getting steamed up every time I sipped on my favourite berry tea before I placed it back on the bedside table

My residence was quite a bit aways from the nearest town or market and I had been told many times over the years that I had to have been crazy to pick the location I had to live. Living at the bottom of a hill sounded alright for summer or even spring but when you lived on an island where it constantly snowed with avalanches happened every other hour, it seemed rather precarious.

Jose, my older brother, lived on the East Coast of Koud and worked as one of the many soldiers that protected our island. He was a tall man with a bulky frame, dark blue hair and piercing hazel eyes that lit up when he was either angry or happy and would seem to fade when he was sad or troubled. His pale face sported freckles across the bridge of his nose that most of my family had.
My brother had been as equally as concerned as any brother would have been but after he had stayed over and had witnessed how the curve of the mountain hadn't allowed my house to be touched he was singing my praises.

My menagerie pets and cures kept me busy during the winter times. My cat, Elliot, had gotten into his fair share of mischief with his orange cat personality. My elder blood hound, whose no longer worked, tried his very best when we went hunting. My chicken was definitely the smarter of my 2 feathered friends I kept in my barn, while my rooster got confused every time the chicken laid eggs.

My lovely reindeer was dear to my heart as I had found her as a baby after hunting season. It was illegal to shoot and nursing mother and I had been very determined as a young adult to find the culprit but unfortunately despite my best effort the culprit was never found and I had become bitter with other hunters.

The morning before the storm hit I had walked across what I called my yard with Bruce, my bloodhound, to the small barn that housed my reindeer, Laylee, my hen and roaster, Bernice and Clint.

It always made me sad whenever I saw Bruce struggling to jump over the snow as during my childhood he had joined my father on his many hunting trips after he had gotten leave from the Navy. After serving 23 years he had passes during his service and all we had left to bury him was his scorched hat, a part of his leg and the watch I had given him for his 50th Birthday. My mother had died shortly after due to depression from losing my father.

I was very sad I had lost both my parents before I had turned 20 and Jose had done everything he had in his power to make sure that I was well taken care of despite his own confusion on how to actually take care for me before I got married.

Not that he wanted me to get married. He was very much against the thought of it.

I tried my very best to get to the barn without falling but unfortunately I was vertically challenged and ended up tripping twice and getting a face full of snow. I envied my brother for having my father's tall frame while I was stuck with my mother's short one. I felt out of breath when I had finally reached the barn, unlocking and pushing open the door to see Laylee giving me the side eye.
