It was the night of July 1st, summer 2013. It was 10 p.m, and I was home alone. Well not really, my dad was here. But he was drunk so he doesn't really count. The whole night I stayed in my small dark room with my laptop, listening to music and talking to people on Facebook. It was really the only thing I needed that night to keep me happy. I was just about to start a conversation with my best friend, Andrew, until my stomach started to growl. I really didn't want to get out of my bed...it was so cozy, and the kitchen was so far. "G-r-r-rrrr" my stomach went. Ugh, I guess I do have to get up.
I got out of my small twin sized bed, and walked towards the door to my room. I opened it, and i was face-to-face with my dad. His blood-shot eyes told me he was still drunk. "R-Riley....when your mom gets home. Tell her to buy some coffee in the morning." Didn't my dad realize yet that my mom isn't here with us anymore? "Dad, it's been three years! How much longer will it take for you to realize mom isn't alive? How could you not remember that three years ago, she got into one of the biggest car accidents New York has ever had?" My eyes were getting teary. I guess I still wasn't over the tragedy. "It was only a dream, child." he said. He always does this. He always says it was only a dream. But it wasn't. My mom died and that was it. End of story.
I walked away with no reply because I really couldn't take it anymore. My dad has been an alcoholic ever since I was born, maybe even before that. Couldn't he stop yet? I walked over to my kitchen and opened my fridge. Of course, there wasn't much in it. My dad doesn't do groceries, only my eldest sister does. And she has her own family to raise, so she only visits us every two weeks. I grabbed a muffin and sat on my kitchen floor. The warmth of the floor flowed through my body. I saw my living room window. I had an amazing view; New York city lights, and buildings. It was beautiful at night.
I finished up my snack and got up to walk over to my bedroom, and my cat Moody, followed me. I shut the door, and locked it. Just in case my dad decided to walk in. He usually doesn't invade my privacy like that but you can never be sure with a drunkard. I got back into my bed so I can finally start talking to Andrew. But to my luck, he was offline. "He'll come back" I tried to reassure myself. He was really bad at replying to messages anyways. Moody jumped onto my keyboard and managed to make a status. "MOODY! NO!" I yelled. She stared so innocently at me with her big green eyes. I could never stay mad at her. I deleted the status before anyone was able to like or comment on it.
I got a message on Facebook. I was hoping it would be Andrew, because I didn't talk to him for the whole day. But it was some random person.
"Hello"
"Do I know you?"
"Beautiful"
"I'm going to block you"
"Don't be meanie to me"
"Wtf...can you stop"
"LOL don't worry Riley, it's me, Andrew. I made a fake account to scare people."
I should have known. Andrew was always the type to try to pull pranks on people. I was just about to reply to him when suddenely he went offline. Oh well, I'll just talk to him tomorrow. We were going to meet up at the park anyways.
I shut down my laptop and went to sleep. I had a dream that night, it was the same dream I've been having since the day my mother died. She would always come to me, and tell me to do well in school. To get accepted into university, and get a good job. But then she would leave, just at that. I would scream for her to come back. But that's when my dream would end. Every single time.
