DISTANCE
Instead of sleeping like I usually would, I spent the rest of the entire class stealing glances from his seat. He looked exactly the same, healthy and still as handsome as ever. I couldn't even understand a single thing the teacher was saying throughout the entire lesson, and I don't think I'll be able to understand any of it at all.
Luke was staring straight at the notebook laid out on his desk. He had a calm face that complemented his black wavy hair that covers a little section of his left eye. His clear blue eyes that I remember, used to always have this sparkle in them no matter what, seemed emotionless and mysterious. It was definitely Luke but at the same time, it wasn't him. He slowly closed his notebook and turned my way. In a panic I quickly turned back, but it was already too late. Our eyes already met, and it gave me wild butterflies in my stomach that wouldn't seem to calm down. I could only feel my face getting hotter and flushed.
"Ms. Shields" The teacher who was writing on the board seems to have already noticed my red tomato face, asked. "..is everything okay?" she added.
"yes.." I replied while trying to make eye contact with her.
Everyone around us seems to have their eyes on me, which didn't help my situation at all. I slightly turned back to peek at Luke and we stared at each other for a second. A second that went by in slow motion, a second that felt like a thousand years. While caught up in a trance, my homeroom teacher snapped me back to reality..
"Ms.Shields!! Come to my office straight after school!" She yelled as she threw one of her chalks my way but I splendidly dodged it.
"Yes ma'am!" I replied in an instant.
Her declaration brought everyone to laughter and I've never felt so embarrassed my entire life. Just as I was on the edge of dying in shame, the lunch bell rang and footsteps made their way out of the room. My homeroom teacher glared at me with her arms crossed. She was a young woman around her twenties who just transferred to our school around winter, by the end of the first semester of last year. She always had her hair up in a tight bun that in no way matched her small framed glasses. She had a strict face and a bad personality where ever she goes. Not sure if it was true, but there was a rumor going around that she is the heiress of a big business company who left her house in order to fulfill her dreams; But right now, the only thing big from her would be those huge pair of earrings almost the size of a golf ball, and the fact that no one will ever judge her bad fashion sense.
I stood up and gave out a relieving sigh and started to head out when i noticed Luke still sitting on his seat and typing on his phone. Luke has never used his phone before in school; or at least I have never caught him using it.
There wasn't a lot of people in the classroom. There were just two girls eating their lunch while chatting, and a group of guys by the window laughing at jokes that only they found funny. I wanted to talk to him again, but remembering what happened this morning scared me. In front of everyone, he asked in a loud voice, who I was. I don't know if I should be mad or sad, but there was only one reason I could think of that would make sense. Luke probably got an amnesia.
If Luke fell from the bridge at that time with all those injuries, I'm pretty sure an amnesia would be inevitable.
That's it! I thought as I gathered all my strength and started walking towards Luke. The closer I got, the atmosphere got darker and darker.
