She has been hurt enough already, and everything she saw now reminded her of it. The pictures on the walls, the whispers as she walked by, and even the man she passed reading the New York Times. Her name was in it, though he probably didn't know that. In a big city like this, little things like hers got lost very easily. It was strange to call it a little thing when it had been the one thing that had changed her entire life.
She took a deep breath to compose herself outside the room. All her life, she had stayed on the sidelines, not causing trouble or calling attention to herself. Now she was about to do something big- the world needed to know what had really happened, and why.
"I can do this," she muttered to herself. "I owe her that much."
Clutching the stack of papers tighter, she pushed the door open and took one step forward. A sharp pain- she knew it was a bullet- hit her right in the spine, killing her almost instantly. She fell crumpled to the floor, blood gushing from her back. Someone screamed, though she was hardly aware of any of it before she took her dying breath.
