"I don't know,"

"I'm right here," he said exasperatedly. "I'm here and I love you. I'm telling you that I love you."

"I didn't want that."

"Then what did you want?"

"I wanted you to give me a reason to stay!" her voice had finally risen, her breath shallow now as the rain poured above them. "You fucked me over and didn't call, ever. It's been seven months, Jay. Seven fucked up months of you not ever giving me a reason to come back."

Shoulders slumped, he wondered what he could say to make her believe him, to make her see.

"I get that the moon is supposed to be some kind of sexy love symbol," he started. "Would you believe if I told you that the moon spoke to me?"

She rolled her eyes. "Were you high?"

"It was... kind of  day dream,"

"And what did the moon say?"

"It didn't say much, only, it looked like you."

"That is fucking ridiculous."

"It smiled at me while I was backpacking with my dad across China. It didn't have your eyes or anything. Or your smile," he smiled then, in turn making her want to. "I wondered if you'd ever... wanted the moon?"

"What?"

"The moon," he paused then. "Do you want it?"

"I just wanted you, Jay."

"Well, if you wanted the moon, I'd get it for you."

Her knees felt shaky as they hugged, her tears warm against his cold shirt.

"I don't get this conversation. I'm still fucking pissed at you. And I don't want the moon."

His arms went around her back gently as she kissed the side of his face, her  smile imprinted into his memory.

"In case you ever do, then," he said, just before he kissed her. "I'd go up there in a heartbeat."

"You're not an astronaut."

"I'll pull some strings. Politicians have rich kids who can pull strings."

They walked through the rain, their hands entwined, their smiles as bright as the moonlight.
