I'm In Love With A Ghost. (part 1)

I fell in love with a ghost. I'm Layla Poltone. This is my story.

I was always known as the preppy rich kid of our small town. But the truth? I'm nothing like that. Social Hiearchy has never been my passion. The best part of my life was the giant 1840 manor my family lived in. It was always so eerie, so different from everything else in my life. Everyone in our town called it the "Old Gold," in honor of my father, the 67 year-old 'player' who just happened to be the richest, most celebrated man in Wyoming because of his big oil find back in '64. I ended up as just the cliche daughter of grave robber. I've never met my mom, and no one has ever been there for me, besides my nanny, Esmeralda.

Okay, so maybe I've had more support than that. There's my plastic friends, my diabetic dog, Sugar, and my boyfriend, Grant.

And of course there's my gift. I can see ghosts.

I'm not crazy, I'm not supernatural. I've never told anyone. I never will.

Unless they find out some other way...

Layla- Age 9

When I got home from school today, I wasn't surprised to see him. He's my ghost. My second father. He's been there for me more than my actual dad. His name's Peter. And he was waiting. He was disappointed. He must of seen me in science class today. Dang it.

It wasn't my fault. I've always been opinionated. My teacher said ghosts weren't real. I spoke out.

Luckily, all of my friends were too busy making lists of all the cutest boys in the class to notice. But Peter noticed. He always does. He also always finds ways to hide from me, so he can spy on me.

"You can't be so blunt," he says softly.

"But you are real! If you weren't, I wouldn't be able to see you!" I exclaimed.

"Layla, you can't just run around saying this stuff! They'll put you in a crazy house!" he pointed out.

"It's just...uh...UGH!" He always gets me with the crazy house stuff. I ran to my room. He's never been in my room. It's something about being a gentlemen. He believes that I need privacy.

The weird thing about my gift, is that not only can I see ghosts, I can touch them. They can touch me. Peter says that it can be very dangerous for ghosts to know that. I never understood this as a nine year-old.

I do now.

Layla- Age 13, 14

I was in my room, waiting. I had know Peter forever. He was only eighteen, and I wanted to know how he died. I never asked, before, but today I wanted to know. I deserved to know.

I went to the kitchen, where he sat by Sugar. They say dogs can't sense ghosts. Sugar could, though, I just knew it.

"Peter?"

He looked at me, smiled and yelled, "Happy Birthday!"

Oh my god! It was my 14th birthday! I totally forgot! So did my father, apparently. He had gone to a "party" today. But Peter remembered!

I hugged him, forgot my question, and enjoyed my birthday.
