the next morning was possibly the most important of fern's life she had many questions that would only be answered this one day and she could never hear the answers again after today.her mother had already packed her a basket full of bread fruits and a trout and she had already started her trek to the mountain but the real journey would begin when she started climbing it.while on her way to the mountain fern could hear the flapping of large wings in the distance and could tell harriet was following her.fern knew that her trek had to be made alone or the rabbit on the moon would refuse her a piant skill.she had to use the method of travel that her ancestors used witch was walking on all fours or the rabbit on the moon would refuse her a paint skill.lastly she had to be pure of heart never once performing an evil act or...the rabbit on the moon would refuse her a paint skill.according to the first law of the trek she could not have harriet following her up the mountain so she decided to let harriet know his presence was not detected.fern like most foxes was clever and knew that harriet would not make him self known if she just asked so she decided to set a scene for a second she stopped walking then dramatically collapsed into a feeble position.just as she had hoped the crane came soaring down and landed a few feet awa from fern he looked at her scared of what might have happened but fern did not leave him in his guessing for long.she sprang up and startled the crane cause him to swiftly jump back using his wings nearly four feet.fern laughed at ow she had startled harriet but soon got to the point.she asked him"harriet why were you following me if you had followed me up the mountain then i would not get a paint skill"harriets legs twisted in an awkward fashion as he said with his head hanging low"I wanted to make sure you got to the mountain safe i was not going to follow up the mountain but animals have been going missing lately my mom told me about this last night i just wanted to"harriet saw in ferns eyes that he had explained enough and need not tell her anything else fern looked at him was a warm smile and said in a calm tone"harriet im sorry i doubted you i should have known you would not have followed me up the mountain...i could not have a better friend to watch my back"harriet gave a small laugh and with that harriet flew off back to his home and fern continued on her way to the mountain eager to recieve a paint skill
